Santiago Bejarano, General Naturalist
Santiago is a veteran tour leader with a passion for wildlife, photography and travel. Originally from Quito, Ecuador, Santiago lived in Vienna, Austria as a young boy. There he became fluent in German before returning to his native Ecuador where he studied Environmental Science and went on to become a leading naturalist guide.
Santiago’s career began over two decades ago as a naturalist guide and tour leader in the Amazon Rainforest, Andes and the Galapagos Islands. It was to be the Galapagos Islands that captivated Santiago most, and where he specialised his guiding career for over 12 years.
Based in the UK since 2003, Santiago turned his focus on Europe, leading hiking trips each summer around the French, Austrian, and Italian Alps, as well as Spain including, the Camino del Santiago and most recently Norway in the Hardanger region (where he worked as a tour leader and guide for US-based company, Wilderness Travel).
Santiago also led British groups to Latin America, visiting; Ecuador, Galapagos, Guatemala, Peru and Brazil in the Pantanal region (where he worked as a tour leader for UK-based company, Think Galapagos).
During his travels, Santiago has been able to pursue his passion for photography. His images of the Galapagos have been published in national newspapers in the UK (including the Financial Times and The Guardian). While in the UK, Santiago gives seminars and workshops on the Amazon Rainforest and the Galapagos Islands for adult and school groups. His love and knowledge of the region and its wildlife really brings them to life for UK audiences. Santiago is regularly invited to be the speaker on behalf of the Galapagos Conservation Trust at events to promote conservation in the Galapagos Islands.
Santiago’s home in the UK is in the little East Yorkshire town of Beverley, where he enjoys time with his wife Rachel and two very active boys Gabriel and Noah. He also pursues his passions for bird watching, wildlife photography, trekking and experiencing world food and cultures.
