Kathy Nako, Vanuatu Specialist

Originally from Australia, Kathy arrived in Vanuatu in 1989 as a volunteer teacher armed with degrees in both Mathematics and English. A stint of teaching in the outer islands of Epi and Ambrym introduced Kathy to paradise, and also to Abel Nako. Sixteen years later, Kathy and Abel have raised three children together. Now living in Port Vila, Kathy has retrained in accountancy and is a chartered accountant operating her own accounting and consulting practice. In addition to accounting and audit work, she regularly does statistical and review analysis for aid agencies and local government as well as for private enterprise. Kathy and Abel operate a new and exciting business together; Vanuatu’s (and quite possibly the world’s) largest nakamal: a meeting place for kava drinking and discussion. Kathy is fluent in Bislama, the lingua franca of Vanuatu, and as a long time expat deeply immersed in modern Vanuatu society, she has a thorough understanding of the challenges and opportunities of contemporary Melanesia.
