Abel Nako, Vanuatu Specialist

Originally a teacher by profession, Ni-Vanuatu Abel Nako completed his undergaduate degree in sociology at the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji. He later completed a masters degree in educational administration in Australia, and initially worked for a local non-governmental organization (NGO) setting up rural training centers throughout the islands. He was appointed as one of the first director generals to manage a public sector reform program with responsibility for agriculture, quarantine, forestry and fisheries in Vanuatu. He subsequently transferred to the post of Director General of Education managing all education within Vanuatu. The tourism enterprise TREK Vanuatu specializes in authentic culture and exploring the natural environment of Vanuatu. He has worked on a number of project evaluation review teams assessing aid effectiveness, and has worked regionally in the Marshall Islands and in Samoa in strategic directions for educational planning. Abel has written a number of papers on land tenure, education and public sector management in Vanuatu, and has been instrumental in setting up a number of Vanuatu statutory bodies and institutions. Together with his wife Kathy, he has recently opened one of the largest kava bars in Vanuatu, which has a regular and diverse mix of patrons nightly enjoying the social “storian” (story telling) tradition that accompanies drinking kava. In his spare time he assists with the Vanuatu Scouts Association and is chairman of the National Executive.
