Fritz Hertel was born in 1969 in Germany where he studied forestry as well as ecology with a focus on animal ecology. Since 2002 he has been working as a science officer for the Umweltbundesamt, a German Federal Environment Agency, supervising an environmental protection and management research project based on the Antarctic Peninsula.

Throughout his life Fritz has had a deep interest in nature and its conservation. Watching and counting birds and guiding bird song excursions are among his favorite activities. Fritz has previously worked as an expedition cruise guide and lecturer in the Sub Antarctic and Antarctic.
