01MIDCAS-A Marrakech – The ‘Pink’ City

Departure: From Casablanca

Duration: 1.5 Days / 1 Night

Re-join Ship: In Agadir

Reserve at least 90 Days prior to Sailing

This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure requires advance booking through Silversea Reservations at least 90 days before sailing. Requests received after this date may be accommodated on a space-available basis and the programme price is subject to change. Payment in full is due within 120 days prior to sailing. This programme is non-refundable if cancelled within 90 days of sailing.  A minimum number of participants is required to operate this programme.

DAY ONE – Casablanca/Marrakech

Depart the ship and begin the approximate 3.5-hour journey to Marrakech, with a restroom stop along the way. Approaching Marrakech, your first glimpse will be of the reddish-brown ramparts that encircle a large part of the city and are one of its premier sights. Enter through one of the imposing gates and head to La Mamounia.

The former palace of a Moroccan crown prince, La Mamounia was converted by the French administration into a hotel in 1923 and in 2009, it reopened following a three-year, $176 million makeover, managed by French interior designer Jacques Garcia.  This historical treasure is known for its gardens – a 17-acre intoxicating array of rose bushes, orange, lemon and olive groves, jacarandas and palms – where Prince Mamoun once threw lavish parties.

Check-in at this marvellous hotel, before savouring the buffet lunch that awaits.

This afternoon, a tour of the city will acquaint you with its most outstanding attractions. A photo stop at the Koutoubia Mosque lets you admire its soaring minaret, a prominent landmark that has pierced the Marrakech skyline for centuries. Continue with your sightseeing drive, passing the old Jewish Quarter en route to the Bahia Palace. Known as Mellah, the Jewish Quarter was established in the mid-1500s and was once home to a large Jewish population.

The 19th-century Bahia Palace, or the ‘Palace of the Favourite’, is the work of some thousand craftsmen who toiled for seven years to embellish the living quarters of the sultan’s favourite concubines, the council chamber and various courtyards. The whole complex comprises a mosque, hammam (Turkish bath), courtyards and gardens. Sections of the palace still function as a royal residence, whilst other parts have been opened to the public as the Bahia Palace Museum. Painstaking restoration has brought back the beauty of white stucco ornaments, mosaics, and intricately carved and painted woodwork.

After a guided tour of the palace and gardens, proceed to the Ben Youssef Medrassa in the centre of the old city. Established in the 14th century and rebuilt 200 years later, the huge complex has served as a prominent learning institution. Its main attraction is the courtyard, a tasteful combination of intricate forms and styles, influenced by Moorish Spain. Decorations made from different types of materials are some of the finest examples of wood and stucco work in Morocco.

Next, your guide takes you on a stroll through the Medina (old town). Its narrow alleys are filled with the aroma of exotic spices and an endless variety of shops, selling everything from carpets to old books and antiques.

The heart of Marrakech is the famous Djemaa el Fna. The square’s fame is based on its atmosphere and charm rather than beauty. Something is always happening here, but the square really comes to life in the evening when musicians, acrobats, snake-charmers, vendors and storytellers entertain an appreciative audience. A stop for refreshments at one of the cafés overlooking the square allows for a good view at the activities below.

Leave the square and head back to the hotel. Take some time to walk around the hotel’s famous gardens that surround.  They offer a luxurious haven of serenity and sensuality – a peaceful oasis at the doorstep of the Medina. There is time to freshen up before partaking in a sumptuous Moroccan dinner at one of Marrakech’s finest restaurants.

Overnight at Hotel La Mamounia (or similar) – Marrakech.

DAY TWO – Marrakech/Agadir

After breakfast and check out, a ride in a horse-drawn carriage takes you to the beautiful Majorelle Gardens. Laid out in the 1920s by French artist Jacque Majorelle, the gardens feature pools, bougainvillea blazing with colours, and buildings painted a vibrant blue. The gardens have been maintained by famous couturier Yves Saint-Laurent. Take a stroll through the gardens and a look inside the museum. Then, join the coach and proceed to a local restaurant for lunch.

After lunch, begin the 3.5-4-hour journey toward the coast and Agadir. Conclude this Moroccan Mid-Voyage Land Adventure at the Port of Agadir where the ship awaits your return.

Please note:  This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure involves lengthy drives and an extensive amount of walking, some of which is through narrow, crowded alleys.
