The Ecuadorian Amazon remains one of the most pristine and easy-to-access of the Amazon Rainforest, and the Napo Wildlife Center’s stunning location and excellent guides combine to offer a first-class experience. Coca, the access point to the lodge, is only an hour-long flight from Quito – a journey which offers breathtaking views of the Andes on clear days. The rest of the journey is by boat and one is immersed in the scenery and wildlife of the rainforest. The following few days are filled with excursions to explore this wild and still-mysterious forest. The property itself is a luxury eco-lodge with private cabanas. It is the only lodge located within the Yasuní National Park, and is wholly owned by the Añangu Quichua native community.

Please note: Participants in this program should schedule their departure flight from Quito, Ecuador.

Please check with your travel professional for details regarding Ecuadorian visa requirements. It is the responsibility of each guest to obtain appropriate visa documents prior to cruising.

DAY 1 – GUAYAQUIL / NAPO WILDLIFE CENTER

Following disembarkation this morning, transfer to the airport for the flight to Quito.  Once there, make the connection to your second flight – a spectacular 30 minute flight over the eastern Andes mountain range to Coca.

After landing and completing airport procedures, a local chiva (a colourful, rural bus) will pick you up from the airport and deliver you to Puerto Francisco de Orellana, 5 minutes away.  Here, you will board a comfortable covered motor canoe and begin the two hour trip down the Napo River to your destination – the Napo Wildlife Center. Lunch is served along the way and birds like herons, kingfishers, and many others can be spotted.

After arriving at the Napo Wildlife Center’s outer dock, you’ll have a small break before embarking on a majestic and peaceful dugout canoe ride to the lodge itself. You’ll be surrounded by trees overhead as your canoe is paddled along a narrow creek that connects to the lake where the lodge is located. The sounds of civilization are soon forgotten here – only the dip of the paddles and the myriad sounds of the surrounding rainforest. There are good possibilities of monkey sightings as well as large birds like toucans, parrots, and macaws. Soon you’ll emerge onto Añangu Lake and spot the lodge spectacularly situated on its shores. Before long, you’ll have a welcome drink in hand as you settle in to your luxurious cabana.

After a delicious dinner, head back to the water for caiman spotting and observation of the natural night sounds of the rainforest.

In 1541, the very first Europeans set out from Quito to explore the dense jungles east of this ancient Incan capital in search of gold and cinnamon. Neither the jungle nor the natives ever revealed where the precious metal of "El Dorado" was to be found, as they floated for 800 miles down the Napo to come upon what they thought to be the Atlantic. But it wasn’t the Atlantic – yet. It was the Great Amazon River, fed by over a thousand tributaries, emptying one third of the planet’s fresh water into the sea.

Almost 500 years have passed since the discovery of this magnificent river system that flows through the world’s largest primeval forest, containing 10% of all existing trees, 70% of all pharmaceutical compounds, and native Indians that live symbiotically with their unique ecosystem. This is the habitat of wildlife that is sure to be watching you – or vice versa – if you are lucky: 500 species of birds, half a dozen species of monkeys, caimans, tapirs, 2,500 species of butterflies and much more.

Overnight at the Napo Wildlife Center

DAY 2 – NAPO WILDLIFE CENTER

Rise early to take advantage of the best time of day for parrot viewing. One of the best parrot clay licks in Ecuador is located one hour’s journey from the lodge, and you’ll reach it just as the day’s parrot activity kicks off. A total of 11 species of parrots, parakeets, and macaws can be seen.

Later, you’ll hike along a forest trail to visit the nearby Quichua community of Añangu. Here, you will have the opportunity to share time with a local family and learn about life in the rainforest.

Afterward, you will return to the creek and hike through the terra firme forest for about 30 minutes in order to reach a second parrot clay lick. Here, if weather conditions allow, you’ll be able to spot different species of parrots, parakeets, macaws. It’s the perfect spot for a boxed lunch before returning to the lodge in the afternoon.

Enjoy dinner at the lodge before retiring for the night.

Overnight at the Napo Wildlife Center

DAY 3  - NAPO WILDLIFE CENTER

After an early breakfast, depart for the finest canopy tower on the Napo. At 36 metres high, the NWC’s canopy tower is a spectacular way to experience the life above the forest floor. This is one of two canopy towers at the NWC (the other is attached to the dining hall and provides great views of the lake and its surrounds).

The tower you’ll visit today is located about 20 minutes from the lodge deep within the terra firme forest. As you ascend the 12-story tower, take note of the different levels of forest before you emerge on top of a huge ceiba tree. Once on the wooden platform, which is actually built into the tree, you’ll be able to enjoy and experience the view formerly reserved only for the birds. The metal tower itself was constructed to the highest standards, galvanized, and carefully inspected by engineers to ensure safety as a top priority. Flocks of colourful tanagers pass right through the canopy of the tree, as do blue-and-yellow macaws. In nearby trees, spider monkeys search for fruit, two species of large toucans call in the early mornings and afternoons, and the life of the forest canopy opens before you. Birds that are virtually impossible to see from the forest floor far below are suddenly right beside you, oblivious to your presence. The canopy tower opens a whole new world.  After drinking in the amazing views of the tower, head back to the lodge for lunch.

This afternoon, explore a terra firme trail with possibilities of finding lizards, colourful manakins, or the unique and endemic golden mantle tamarin monkeys. After the hike, explore the lake and creeks by dugout canoe with the likely possibility of running into a giant otter family on the way.

Dinner is once again served at the lodge.

Overnight at the Napo Wildlife Center

DAY 4  -NAPO WILDLIFE CENTER / QUITO

Today, make an early departure for one last canoe excursion back to the Napo River. The creek may reveal new sights of giant otters, monk saki monkeys, or any of a number of rare birds. Upon reaching the NWC docking area, take a short break before embarking on motorized canoe for your return to Coca. Once in Coca, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your return flight to Quito.

As you arrive in Quito, the local Silversea representative will be waiting for you in order to drive you to your hotel. After check in, take a few moments to freshen up, then leave the hotel for a tour of the city.  This afternoon’s sightseeing demonstrates some of the reasons why Ecuador’s capital earned its honor as the first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Marvel at San Francisco Church and its museum of religious art, La Compañía and the seven tons of gold gilding its glittering walls, and the bustling Independence Plaza, flanked by the Presidential Palace and the Cathedral of Quito. Rich in art treasures, fine woodcarvings, and flowering balconies, the historic center is the lifeblood of Quito.

After the city tour, your guide will drive you to a local restaurant where dinner is served before continuing back to the hotel.

Overnight at the Casa Gangotena, Quito, Ecuador

The local Silversea representative will coordinate with you to insure your transfer back to the airport is scheduled at the appropriate time.

Guests are responsible for any charges imposed by the airlines for excess or overweight luggage.

Accessibility:

This program requires participants to be physically fit and able to walk through uneven and/or slippery terrain.  The sights visited on this program are not suitable for mobility-impaired guests; therefore, this tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair.

Vaccinations:

Consult your physician for information regarding vaccinations or medications that may be appropriate for your state of health.

Please note:

·        Sites and order of visits are subject to change due to weather or other operational influences

·        Guests should plan to wear comfortable shoes, sun hats, sun glasses and sun lotion

·        Comfortable clothing, binoculars and a sun hat are strongly recommended

·        Cameras and insect repellent are recommended

·        Wildlife and bird sightings are not guaranteed

·        Few vendors accept credit cards; we recommend that guests bring cash (USD) if they wish to purchase anything. In Ecuador $50 or $100 notes are not easily accepted, so guests should try to bring small change. Travelers’ checks are not accepted

·        Climate – In the tropical Rainforest it is the best to be prepared for all kinds of weather. A common question is about the "dry and wet season" of the region. However it is best not to trust such a generalization to plan a trip to the Amazon. At times it can be hot and sunny, but a cool rainstorm may appear at a moment’s notice during any time of the year.

·        This region’s climate is classified as Tropical and Humid, with annual temperatures between 23-25.5° C/ 73-78° F, humidity between 70-90%, and annual rainfall up to 3,000 mm/118 inches! Though it can rain on any given day, in general the months from November through February are defined as the "dry" season and the months of March through October as the "wet" season. As in so many parts of the world these days, many of these "rules" are quixotic.

All Land Adventures require a minimum number of participants in order to operate as described.  If this minimum number is not met, Silversea reserves the right to offer the programme at a different rate based on private arrangements, or to cancel the specific departure.  Silversea’s published cruise cancellation policy will remain in effect.  All Land Adventure fares are subject to change and are not guaranteed until payment is received in full by Silversea.   All Land Adventures are non-transferable and non-refundable for any reason, within 90 days of sailing.  This description is a general overview of this programme.  Our local operator reserves the right to substitute other sites if local situations, including holidays and weather, require.  The programme described in this brochure is provided by independent contractors. Indulge your senses with the scenic splendour and unique history of Peru.  Board the legendary ‘Hiram Bingham’ for a picturesque train-ride to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, explore the ‘Lost City of the Incas’.  Your overnight stay at the famed Sanctuary Lodge allows you to spend additional time at the historic site with fewer tourists.

Please note: Participants in this program should schedule their departure flight from Lima, Peru for departure after 10:00PM.

Please check with your travel professional for details regarding Peruvian and Ecuadorian visas. It is the responsibility of each guest to obtain appropriate visa documents prior to cruising.

DAY 1 – GUAYAQUIL / LIMA

Disembark in Guayaquil and board your transportation for a city tour of Ecuador’s second city (and main business hub).  Along the way you’ll see the Parque Simon Bolivar (also known as Parque de la Iguanas), home to several exotic bird species and, of course, iguanas.  In addition, you’ll visit the promenade at the waterfront Malecon Simon Bolivar, and in the Las Penas district, the Mercado Plaza del Sur, designed by Gustav Eiffel.

Stop for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing on to the airport for the flight to Lima.   As you arrive in Lima, the Peruvian representative meets you and assists with your transfer to the city’s most elegant district, Miraflores.   Check-in at your hotel and enjoy the balance of the evening at your leisure.

Overnight at the Miraflores Park/Orient Express Hotel – Lima, Peru

DAY 2 – GUAYAQUIL / CUSCO

Enjoy an early breakfast at the hotel this morning before returning to the airport for the short flight to Cusco.  Once there, transfer to the hotel.  After a quick stop to freshen up, continue on for lunch at a local restaurant.

Begin this afternoon on a city tour of Cusco and the main sights including the Korikancha Temple, a Dominican church and convent that was built on the foundations of the Korikancha, or palace of gold, the principal Inca religious building, dedicated to the worship of the sun.   Continue to the beautiful square surrounded by stone arches and a spectacular arcade constructed during colonial times.  Visit the Cathedral, whose construction was begun in 1560 and was consecrated in 1669. This incredible structure exhibits Gothic, Mannerist-Renaissance and Baroque influences.

Overnight at the Monasterio Hotel – Cusco, Peru

DAY 3 – CUSCO / MACHU PICCHU

Breakfast is served at the hotel this morning.  Later, transfer to the train station in the Sacred Valley where the Hiram Bingham train awaits.   Your rail journey celebrates the spirit of expedition and perseverance that is the hallmark of the railways of Peru, taking its name from the explorer Hiram Bingham who discovered the ‘Lost City of the Incas’.

Brunch is served en route. Upon arrival at the site, commence a guided tour of the marvellous Citadel, then take a stroll through this impressive archaeological site on your own. Explore the famous "Lost City of the Incas" and feel its pulse while visualizing the lives of the priests, craftsmen, and servants who lived in this seemingly incredible site.  Excavations have only added to the mystery, revealing the skeletons of 173 people along with artifacts and woolen clothing, though no gold.

Afterward, relax with afternoon tea at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel located within the very grounds of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary citadel.  Dinner is served at the Lodge.
