Excursions

This is a self-exploration opportunity and advanced reservations are not required.

Devil's Island is but one of the infamous penal colonies of the Iles du Salut archipelago.

Today, visitors arrive at Ile Royale, the larger of the two islands (out of three) which can be visited, to experience the haunting history of this former penal colony. Pathways allow you to circle the island and to wander among the overgrown ruins of prison cells and administrative buildings. A recent restoration program has been successful in recovering some of the buildings, one of which now houses a small museum. There is also a hotel, the Auberge Iles du Salut, providing modest tourist facilities.

While there are no organised excursions available, one or two English-speaking guides from the mainland are available for directions and to provide information.

After tendering ashore, visitors will be attended by the tour staff for a brief historical presentation of the Islands.

From 1852 to 1948, the main penal colonies were established on the three French Salvation Islands to hold the most notorious criminals and political outcasts. Those who were sentenced to seven or more years and survived were required to remain in French Guiana for life. Of 80,000 prisoners sent to the islands, some 50,000 died here. Ile Royale housed the administrative centre and the wardens' accommodations. The complex was virtually a self-contained community with houses, offices, a hospital, bakery, butcher shop and church.

On nearby Devil's Island are the ruins of the facility used for housing political prisoners. Here the inmates were often left without guards, since strong currents and sharks made a getaway virtually impossible. To this day there are no proper facilities to land on Devil's Island and therefore visit is prohibited. All penal facilities in French Guiana were finally shut down in the 1940s.

The tour staff will be on hand to direct you towards the walking paths that lead uphill, where the majority of the buildings, including the museum and the small hotel are located.

Walking on the island is on hilly and uneven paths; the road circling the island is mostly on flat ground. The climate is hot and humid. Wear lightweight clothing, a sun hat and your walking shoes to explore this remote and exotic location. Tenders will be running continuously during our stay, so you may return to the ship at any time.

Please note: Check-in time at the hotel is 3:00PM.  If your flight arrives in the early morning, you may wish to guarantee your room for check-in upon arrival for an additional cost.

DAY 2 - BUENOS AIRES / MENDOZA

Following an early breakfast this morning, check out and transfer to the airport for your flight to Mendoza.  Transfer upon arrival to the Posada Salentein estate.  A small and exclusive estancia, the property is surrounded by the vineyards of Bodegas Salentein with stunning views of the Andes.

Lunch is served at the estate before setting out for an excursion to the Killka Estate.  Killka wines stand out by their fruity character, good structure and varietal expression. The Malbec harvest of 2008 was awarded 90 points in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

Return to the Posada for dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 3 - MENDOZA

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning followed by a tour of the area.  Located at the foot of the Andes range, Mendoza is clearly recognized as the major wine region in Argentina. The area is notable for its very hot summers and plentiful sunlight. Added to this, sparse annual rainfall has encouraged the use of artificial irrigation creating perfectly tended oases of plentiful fruit.

End your tour with lunch and a visit at the Pulenta Estate.  Here, the 135 hectare-vineyard grows at 980 metres (3,215 feet) above sea level and enjoys an extraordinary climate and huge temperature ranges, all of which create favourable conditions for viticulture.

The vines, which were brought from France and Italy and planted by Antonio Pulenta, flourish at the feet of the mountains.  Meltwater flowing from higher elevations irrigates the Estate and its purity is reflected in the vigour, intensity and freshness of the fruit.

Return to the Posada Salentein for dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 4 - MENDOZA / BUENOS AIRES

Following breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the airport for the return flight to Buenos Aires.  Once there, return to the Sheraton Park Tower Hotel and enjoy the balance of the day at your leisure in this dynamic capital city.  Dinner this evening is on your own account.

Evening Event

February 15, 2015

Reserve by: November 12, 2014

This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure requires advance booking with Silversea Reservations by November 12, 2014.  Tickets are available in limited quantities and participation cannot be guaranteed for those guests not booking well in advance.  Tickets are non-refundable once added to your booking. The price of tickets will increase closer to the date of Carnival and the programme price is subject to change.

Indulge your senses with the exciting atmosphere of the world-renowned Carnavale parade during your visit to Rio de Janeiro.

Depart the pier for the approximately one-hour drive to the Sambódromo. Located near downtown Rio de Janeiro at Rua Marquês de Sapucaí in Cidade Nova, this permanent structure is 1,968 feet (600 metres) in length and seats 60,000 people.  Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and built in 1983, the Sambódromo hosts sporting events, conferences and concerts during the rest of the year, and houses a public education centre which presently teaches 5,000 children.

Upon arrival at the parking area, leave your coach for the brief walk to the grandstand area at Sector 9 (or similar).  After being seated, view the lively and colourful parades; the high point of Rio's Carnavale celebration.  Held over two nights, the parades are the culmination of months of intense preparation by a dozen schools at the top of the highly-competitive Carnavale League.

During your visit, see between eight and twelve oversized floats and approximately 4,000 people make their way down the 'avenida' while singing and dancing in a lively procession.  After midnight, return to the pier on any of the three shuttle buses departing during the intervals (schedule to be announced onboard) between one school and the next.

Please note: This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure is scheduled to operate on the evening of Sunday, February 15, 2015 and departs after an early dinner onboard. This is a party, festival atmosphere; congestion during the transfer and during the walk to your seating can be expected. It involves walking to the grand-stand seats with many steps to negotiate and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. The tickets are by assigned seat numbers: pre-arranged seating assignments cannot be guaranteed.  Guests wishing to sit with other guests should advise the Shore Concierge onboard. Transfers to and from Carnivale are exclusive to guests purchasing Silversea's Rio Carnavale package and cannot be sold separately. Guests sailing with Silversea for the entire Circle South America Grand Voyage will receive our Carnavale Event package, complimentary to these guests.  Full Grand Voyage Guests should not add this package to their booking.  They are automatically listed as participating in our event.  Space is limited; we suggest you purchase tickets well in advance to obtain the best seating at the best price.

The state of Paraná is home to one of Brazil's most unforgettable sights, the Iguassu Falls. Divided between Brazil and Argentina, both countries have created national parks on their side of the falls and views from both are spectacular and different. In addition to a magical landscape, the dense forest surrounding the falls is inhabited by over 400 different species of birds. The falls are fed from some 30 rivers that rush toward the 200-foot precipice where it culminates with a roaring, earth-shaking noise as the water plunges down in a great, mist-laden torrent. This is truly a wonder of nature and one of the most unique sights in the world. This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure includes visits to both sides of the Iguassu Falls.

Booking Deadline: November 12, 2014

Visit one of the great natural wonders of the world, Iguassu Falls, located in between Brazil's Paraná state and Argentina. Whether referred to by its Portuguese spelling (Iguaçu or Iguassu) or the Spanish (Iguazú), both countries have declared their side of the falls a national park, and views from either side are spectacular and different. The whole area is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In addition to a magical landscape, the dense forest surrounding the falls is inhabited by over 400 different species of birds. The awesome cataracts are fed from some 30 rivers which climax in an extraordinary spectacle when some 300 separate 'falls' form a horseshoe and thunder over a 2.5-mile (4 km)-wide precipice in a great, mist-laden torrent. Higher and wider as Niagara, Iguassu never fails to present visitors with unforgettable memories. This three-night trip to Iguassu allows for an adventure of a special kind. Optionally, a helicopter flight over the falls promises to provide an additional breath-taking experience.

DAY ONE - Monday, February         16, 2015 Rio/Iguassu

Depart the ship and transfer to Rio's airport for a scheduled flight to Foz do Iguassu (with a connection in Sao Paulo). Upon arrival at the Iguassu airport, you are met and transferred to the deluxe Das Cataratas Hotel for check-in. The hotel enjoys a unique location inside the Iguassu National Park, only a few steps from the falls. Deluxe rooms allow for partial view of the falls. There is a pool in the beautiful gardens and rooms are air conditioned. This evening enjoy a buffet-style dinner at the hotel.

Overnight accommodation at Das Cataratas Hotel - Iguassu National Park.

DAY TWO - Tuesday, February 17, 2015 - Iguassu Falls & Macuco Safari

After breakfast, begin with a walking tour of the falls' Brazilian side. The main trail, approximately 1,744 yards (1,600 metres) in length, leads to the base of the biggest waterfall. Here a catwalk extends out over the brink of a series of falls, providing a good general view of the falls. The catwalk takes you close to Devil's Throat where you can observe the full force of this gigantic fall as its waters crash down with earth-shaking noise. Rising mist often culminates in brilliant rainbows. Your walk ends at a tower with an elevator to the top, from where you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view and great photo opportunities.

Next, proceed to Porto Canoas restaurant for lunch. There is time after lunch to freshen up before departing on your Macuco Safari Wagon ride. A brief drive brings you to the Macuco Safari entrance gates, where an open, jeep-towed wagon takes you along a two-mile (three-kilometre) jungle trail with unobstructed views of the scenery. A local guide will point out examples of the park's flora and fauna.

At the end of the Macuco Safari Wagon ride, transfer back to the hotel, where a buffet dinner is served this evening.

DAY THREE - Wednesday, February 18, 2015 - Argentinean Falls & Bird Park

Following breakfast, depart the hotel and drive toward the Argentinean side of the falls.  En route, there is a Customs' check at the Tancredo Neves Bridge which crosses the Iguassu River and marks the border between Brazil and Argentina. Continue along a scenic highway into the Argentine Iguazú National Park and make your first stop at the Visitors' Centre. Then proceed on foot along the Superior Circuit to the up-river cascades and board the Ecological Jungle Train to the most impressive observation point of the falls - the Devil's Throat. Here the Iguazú River crashes down almost 262 feet (80 metres), creating an awesome spectacle.

End your morning tour of the falls at L'Aqua Restaurant for a buffet lunch. The restaurant is located inside the Iguazú National Park, built and designed to harmonise with the surrounding subtropical jungle environment.

Leaving the Iguazú National Park, head back toward the Brazilian National Park. Stop en route for a visit to the Bird Park, a world-class aviary amidst second-growth subtropical forest. A walking tour along catwalks leads through native vegetation and to several life-size aviaries, enriched with cascades and bridges. The park keeps over 900 birds from 150 species which can be observed without the interference of netting or screens. Some of the birds have been rehabilitated and cannot be returned to nature.

Following your visit (approximately one hour), continue with the drive to the hotel. There is time to relax before a buffet style dinner is served.

DAY FOUR - Thursday, February 19, 2015 - Iguassu/Salvador de Bahia

Guests on this Mid-Voyage Land Adventure must carry their passport (including a Brazilian visa) with them. Participants will miss the ship's call in Buzios. Most of Day One is spent traveling by air. In case of any flight changes, the programme may need adjusting and the itinerary can change.  Note that due to the time of year, availability on this program is very limited and programme the rates charged to Silversea are higher than normal as a result of Carnivale demand.  We thank you for your understanding.

Optional: Helicopter flights of 7- to 10-minute duration can be booked and paid for on site. The helicopter carries a maximum of 3 passengers per flight and operation is subject to all seats being booked. At the time of writing, the price was $125 per person for the short flight.
