Excursions

The scenic beauty and historic landmarks of Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas and Frutillar are yours to discover during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.

This excursion takes in the main attractions of Puerto Montt and the nearby towns of Puerto Varas and Frutillar, both cities located on the shores of one of the largest lakes in Chile, the Lake Llanquihue, with spectacular views of the snow-capped Osorno Volcano.

Puerto Montt

Puerto Montt was founded in 1853 by German immigrants and their stalwart promoter Vicente Pérez Rosales, who named the town after another promoter of immigration, President Manuel Montt. Today it is the commercially and strategically very important capital of Chile's Lake Region featuring middle-European architecture, with high-pitched, redwood-shingled roofs and ornate balconies.

Leave the pier to head directly to the picturesque Angelmó Fishing Warf where a short stop will be made to visit its sea food market. Continue driving through the city colorful shingled houses can be seen as well as highlights such as the redwood cathedral on the city's plaza, which is the city's oldest building (dating back to 1856).

Frutillar

Continue towards Frutillar town for a sightseeing drive. This lakeside town offers a rich example of the lovely architecture popular with German immigrants to the lake Llanquihue area, and some spectacular views of the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes (if weather permitting). The town was founded in 1856 as an embarkation point with four piers. A visit will be made to the Regional Settlers Museum, which features a collection of 19th-century antiques, clothing, and artifacts gathered from various immigrant German families around the area.

Puerto Varas

Then continue to Puerto Varas where a short orientation drive is included. During a stop at the main square, next to Lake Llanquihue, you have the opportunity to walk around this charming town and take photographs across the waters of the Llanquihue to one of the regions icons; the mighty Volcano Osorno. Puerto Varas is one of Chile's most charming towns, not only because of its privileged lakeside location, but also because of its quaint, German-influenced architecture, and its friendly, laid-back atmosphere.

The city was built by the sweat and tenacity of German immigrants, and later it became a port for goods being shipped from the lake Llanquihue area to Puerto Montt (mostly timber). Today most of the area's middle- and upper-middle-class residents call Puerto Varas home and commute to Puerto Montt and other surrounding places for work.

Before returning back to the pier in Puerto Montt, an optional drop off will be offered at the colourful Angelmo Handicraft Market.

Please note: Tour involves minimal walking with a few steps to negotiate at the museum and is suitable for guests with limited mobility and for those who utilise a wheelchair; however the houses in the museum are not wheelchair accessible. Participants must be able to embark and disembark the coach with minimal assistance.  We suggest guest dress in warm seasonal attire and wear flat, walking shoes and a waterproof windbreaker as weather can change quickly in this region. The order of this tour may vary.

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive southwest towards the Maullin River, at times over paved and gravel roads. Whilst passing by dense and silent forests, you might catch the brown trout, rainbow trout and salmon for which Chile is renowned. Instruction and assistance is provided throughout the tour.

Join us on this once in a life time experience as you travel by chartered catamaran to one of the most spectacular sceneries in Southern Chile.

After cruising through the beautiful Chilean fjords, the ship will anchor at Paso Quesahuen, a distance of about 60 minutes cruising time from Laguna San Rafael.

Due to the limited capacity of the catamaran, three departures are scheduled. Whether you are in the first or the last group, the incredible scenery and the thrill of this unique outing will make for lasting memories.

Board the catamaran shipside at the appointed time and cruise toward the Laguna San Rafael. Once anchored inside the lagoon and near the San Valentin Glacier you can enjoy a close-up view of this awesome mass of ice rising up from the lake like a 'blue-hued wall'.  You can see huge chunks of ice 'calving' and crashing into the water with thundering noise. Watch in amazement this breathtaking spectacle and make sure to have your camera ready. After lingering for approximately 45 minutes, the catamaran will slowly make its way back out of the lagoon amongst chunks of ice scattered across the water. The picture is a fascinating kaleidoscope of incredible colours of surreal, translucent blues and greens.

Hot and cold refreshments are served during the cruise whilst you are comfortably seated in the cozy interior, or you may venture to the outdoor deck areas.

Please note: It is recommended that you dress warmly and in layers. Remember to bring gloves, a warm hat and shawl, and your camera. Expect the weather to be unpredictable. Due to the remote location there is no other sightseeing option or shore-side activities available.   The ship will not dock, independent sightseeing is not possible in this destination.

Excursions

Discover the past to present in Punta Arenas during this half-day outing.

Punta Arenas, with a population of 110,000, is the capital of the Magallanes and Antarctic Region, and it is Patagonia's most important city; its streets hum with activity and its airport and seaports bustle with traffic. The town has made a living from coal mines, wool production, oil, fishing, and as a service center for cargo ships.

Cerro De La Cruz

The tour commences with a drive from the pier through the city of Punta Arenas to the observation point located at Cerro De La Cruz, where a short stop will be made to enjoy the wonderful panoramic view of the city and the Straits of Magellan.

Mayorino Borgatello Salesian Museum

Drive to the Mayorino Borgatello Salesian Museum, which was created by the Salesian missionaries, where exhibits illustrating the habitat and history of Patagonia's aboriginal people and the region's natural history can be seen. The museum consists of 3 floors which are only accessible by stairs and most explanations are only written in Spanish.

Patagonia Institute

Continue with a visit of Patagonia Institute, an open-air museum with horse-drawn carts, farm machinery, and other items from the golden age of Punta Arenas. Due to the Patagonia Institute being an outdoor museum it is necessary to walk around on uneven terrain in order to visit it.

Plaza de Armas

Finally drive to the city centre and visit the Plaza de Armas, where a statue of Magellan with a mermaid and two Fuegian Indians at his feet can be seen. Punta Arenas' earliest wealth is reflected in the grand stone mansions that encircle this square, which were built with earnings from the sheep ranches of the late 1800s.

Following this visit, make the return drive to the pier in order to re-join the ship.

Please note: This tour involves moderate walking with stairs and uneven ground to negotiate. Guests should dress in seasonal attire and wear flat, walking shoes. There are souvenirs / handicrafts for sale in the area of the stops made. The order of sites visited may vary. Explanations in Borgetello museum are mostly written in Spanish.

Excursions

Discover the unique and entertaining denizens of Otway Sound during this memorable, half-day visit to the Otway Penguin Rookeries.

From November to end of February, the Magellan penguins return to land at Otway Bay after months at sea, arriving in southern Chile to mate, creating a stirring spectacle for those fortunate enough to be in this distant part of the world at the time.

Dubbed the "bird children" by the local human residents, the penguins are small, measuring up to 70 cm tall, and have a white chest and black back like most penguin species. Watching them waddle along the beach or slip into the sea tends to produce a sense of wonder among observers.

The road to Otway is isolated, winding its way through miles and miles of pampas, flat stretches of land that reach as far as the eye can see, until sky and earth meet gently on the horizon. It is both beautiful and desolate here, eerily reminiscent of the Scottish highlands. Ahead lay magnificent views of the almost permanently snow-covered mountains of the Pinto Range and Riesco Island. Keep watch for flights of wild geese and this area's many rheas (Magellan ostriches), representing the rich fauna of Chilean Patagonia. As beautifully harsh as the land seems it is also home to rabbits, hares, foxes, and numerous species of birds, including the large Ñandues, or Lesser Rheas, large emu-like birds that are a protected species in Chile. Flights of wild geese and the occasional fox may be spotted along the way as part of the rich fauna of the Chilean Patagonia.

To reach the actual nests and beaches where the penguins live, it is necessary to leave the coach and walk approximately three quarters of a mile, following a round circuit on trails that are unpaved and uneven. A guide is always on-hand to assist, and answer questions. A camera is a must, since there are some great opportunities for close-up photos of this friendly creature.

The animals are naturally curious and untamed; if approached too quickly, they will scamper into their burrows or try to reach the water. Do not attempt to touch them, as their bites can inflict serious wounds. A wooden partition with a special viewing spot separates the beach from the grassy area and the burrows.

Following ample time to observe the birds, commence the hike back to the coach parking area. Upon arrival, re-board your coach for the approximate 1.5-hour return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking, including a hike between the coach parking area to the penguin reserve on grassy, uneven ground for approximately .75 miles.  Wooden paths are not in the best condition and guests must be steady on their feet. This tour is recommended for guests in good physical condition, and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. The weather in Otway is typically cold and windy; a windbreaker, scarf and sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes are recommended. Remember to bring a camera.

Riders will be able to stop along the way at every attraction to allow for photo opportunities. Punta del Este's charm,  well-kept gardens adorned with colourful flowers and beautiful sandy beaches with its clear Atlantic Ocean makes it a perfect location for a relaxing bike ride.

Day 3 - EASTER ISLAND

After a leisurely breakfast meet your guide and head along the southeast coast at Ahu Hanga Te'e in the sector of Vaihu.  From Vaihu continue on to the Ahu Akahanga also known as the "platform of the king". According to legends this is the site where the bones of the first king of Easter Island (Hotu Matua) are buried.   A short drive follows to Ahu Tongariki, formerly the largest platform on the Island destroyed by a tidal wave in 1960, but since reconstructed. From there, continue to the spectacular Rano Raraku quarry, so symbolic of the island and the original "factory" of the moais. The gigantic statues cover the inner and outer slopes of the volcano; they can be admired in the different stages of production, from carving in the rock to upright position, and lying face down on their intended road to their platforms.

The tour continues along the north coast and passes through La Perousse Bay to stop at Ahu Te Pito Kura.  This is the site of the largest moai ever transported and erected onto an ahu. The moai paro stood at 9.8 meters with an estimated weight of 82 tons. Its top knot alone weighs approximately 11 tons.  It is also believed to be the last moai to be toppled, sometime in the 1840's.

The next stop is the beach of Anakena where according to native legend Hotu Matua first landed on Rapa Nui.  At this site you will see the Ahu Nau Nau partially restored in 1978 by Rapa Nui Archeologist Sergio Rapu. Located in this same area is the Ahu Ature Huki. The moai standing on this ahu was the first moai to ever be re-erected onto an ahu. This was done by a group of islanders working with Thor Heyerdahl and the Norwegian expedition in 1956.  A tasty boxed lunch is served in a shaded area at Anakena Beach or at Rano Raraku Volcano.

From Anakena, take the inland road through Vaitea back to town, arriving back at the hotel in the early evening.

Enjoy your final dinner on the island at the hotel or in a local restaurant.

With a surface area of approximately 310,000 square miles (800,000 square kilometres), the region known as Patagonia encompasses the southern cone of South America, including parts of both Chile and Argentina.  Visit the area's most famous national parks - Torres del Paine in Chile and Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina.  Torres del Paine offers surreal ice-clad peaks, ancient forests, dazzling lakes, immense glaciers and its very own ice cap.  Just across the ice cap is Los Glaciares National Park with its landscape of sharp peaks, glaciers and luminescent lakes of many colours. Head south to El Calafate and to Perito Moreno, Patagonia's only advancing glacier on Silversea's Patagonia Express.

DAY ONE - Friday, February 1, 2015 - Punta Arenas/Torres Del Paine

Disembark the ship after breakfast and meet your guide.  Begin your journey with a short sightseeing drive through downtown area, appreciating its European architecture that provides a hint of the wealth and luxury that was abundant during its time as one of the most active ports in the Southern Cone. With a harsh climate it could be hard to imagine life at the end of the world but the history presented today and the bustle on the streets shows us the reality of life at the southern-most city on the continent.

Punta Arenas, which in English means 'Sandy Point' with a population of 120,000 is the capital of the Magellanic and Antarctic Region XII, and it is Chilean Patagonia's most important and largest city; its streets hum with activity and its airport and seaports bustle with traffic. The town has made a living from carbon mines, wool production, petroleum, fishing, and as a service centre for cargo ships.

Afterwards continue directly towards Puerto Natales town, located approximately 130 miles (210 kilometres) north. Savour a traditional barbecue lunch served at a cosy restaurant in town and discover why Patagonian barbecues are so famous.

After lunch, drive for about two hours towards Torres del Paine National Park, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site with over 242,000 hectares of lakes, waterfalls, glaciers and mountain peaks. Words cannot do justice to the creamy blues and greens that reflect in the lakes and waterfalls of the 8th Wonder in the World.

Enter the Park by Laguna Amarga. Residents of the area are the 'guanacos', 'gwa NAH ko', small humpless camels that look like a member of the llama family. A stop at the park entrance will allow you to take some pictures, take advantage of the restroom facilities, and collect a park map.

Continue to the Nordenskjold Lake viewpoint to see the lake's reflection as it bathes the mountainside of the Paine range with its emerald green colour. The lake gives life to the impetuous 'Salto Grande' (big waterfall) forming the quiet Pehoe Lake. Walk down a wooden path to the Salto Grande waterfall and be sure to wear your windbreaker, as the gusts can be powerful. Around every curve is another bold work of nature, possible wildlife sightings and dramatic looks at the domineering peaks. Wildlife that may be seen here includes groups of wild guanacos, a flying condor or the flightless ñandu (rhea) bird.

There will be enough time to admire the area and if you wish, to walk an additional 300 yards (275 metres) up to the viewpoint of Cuernos del Paine. Your journey continues as you skirt the Paine River and passing by the headwaters of the Serrano River.

Arrive at Hotel Serrano. The hotel is set at the edge of the Torres del Paine National Park. It has the gorgeous views of the mountains and set in a wonderfully tranquil setting.  After check-in, make your way to your room, freshen-up and explore before regrouping for dinner at the hotel's main restaurant.  The rest of the evening is spent at your leisure.

Overnight accommodation at Hotel Serrano - Torres del Paine National Park.

DAY TWO - Monday, February 2, 2015 - Torres del Paine/ El Calafate

Enjoy the buffet breakfast at the hotel and afterwards check-out and begin your day's exploration.

Your driver takes you towards the Grey Lake area which is located a distance of approximately 13 miles (21 kilometres) over a gravel road. Upon arrival, leave the coach and walk along a natural path, within the forest, leading to the lake's beach.  Here, you are able to observe the ice floating from the Grey Glacier (which can be seen far away at the middle of the lake). The landscape is impressive, and the characteristic Patagonian wind on the lake makes this attraction unforgettable.

After this unique experience, walk back to the vehicle and continue with the drive to the Cerro Castillo area (Chilean border) with stops on the way to take photos of the landscape, flora and fauna. At stop for lunch is made at a local restaurant in Cerro Castillo.  The facilities may be a little basic but the local fare is considered very tasty. There is time to do a little souvenir shopping before re-boarding the coach.

After lunch cross the border into Argentina, and continue the 3.5-hour journey through the Patagonian steppes until you will reach El Calafate town. Along the way the scenery includes local farms and you may see wildlife such as rheas and Patagonian hares.

El Calafate is a small tourist village placed at the southern coast of Argentino Lake and considered the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park. It owes its name to a typical Patagonian fruit bush. According to the tradition, whoever eats the bush's berries always returns to Patagonia. Its urban view shows a picturesque small village surrounded by beautiful trees, with no high buildings and plenty of colourful gardens that make this village an oasis in the middle of the barren Patagonian landscape.

Your journey concludes at the Xelena Hotel & Spa. Situated on the banks of the Argentine Lake, the hotel offers landscape views of Patagonia.  Meet for dinner in the hotel at the appointed time.

Overnight accommodation at Xelena Hotel & Spa - El Calafate

DAY THREE - Tuesday, February 3, 2015 - Los Glaciares National Park/ Perito Moreno/Ushuaia

Dine on an early breakfast and depart the hotel at about 7:30am, headed to Los Glaciares National Park and arrival at Perito Moreno Glacier.

As you leave El Calafate, admire the Argentine Lake with its Round Bay populated with an important variety of birds such as the swan of black neck, flamenco, duck steam, gallareta, and cauquenes.

Los Glaciares National Park comprises scenery of mountains, lakes and forests, including a large portion of the Andes practically covered with ice and snow to the west and the arid Patagonian steppe to the east. Its name is due to the presence of numerous glaciers that have their origin in the great Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the largest ice field in the southern hemisphere after Antarctica -which occupies almost half of the park. Also known as Southern Patagonian Icecap, it feeds 47 large glaciers, of which 13 descend to the Atlantic Sea. There are also more than 200 glaciers of lesser magnitude, independent of the Patagonian Ice Field.

This huge mass represents the third largest ice mass in the world, after the Antarctica and Greenland. The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the world's few remaining advancing glaciers, currently grinding its way down the Cordillera directly into an arm of the enormous Lago Argentino. About every three years the glacier cuts off the flow of water into the lake resulting in an immense accumulation of pressure as the water behind the glacier rises. Once in front of this glacier, everything is majestic. You will be able to go around the walkways to catch different views of it.

After enjoying the views and taking many photos, drive back to the El Calafate for lunch at a local restaurant.

Then proceed directly to El Calafate airport to board the domestic scheduled flight to Ushuaia, capital city of Tierra del Fuego Island, located by the Beagle Channel and it is surrounded by the Martial Hills. Flying time is about 75 minutes.  Upon arrival, you are met by our local representative and transferred directly to Ushuaia pier to re-join Silver Shadow.

Please note:   This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure is recommended to guests who are physically fit.  It requires a moderate amount of walking that can be intense at times, over uneven terrain, along trails, over sand and rock and up/down inclines. It is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. The walk to Perito Moreno glacier is over a metal path with many steps to negotiate.  The weather can be windy and cold on the walkways.  This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure involves fairly long drives: 3 hours Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales, 2 hours Puerto Natales to Torres del Paine, 5-7 hours Torres del Paine to El Calafate. This excursion involves touring in the outdoors and guests should expect to be exposed to changing cold and/or wet weather and strong winds at times; please pack accordingly. Land Programmes

Spend two nights at the historic Posada Salentein in the heart of Argentina's most prolific wine region.  In addition to Merlot and Pinot Noir, the region is notable for its Malbecs.  Enjoy tastings at award-winning wineries.

DAY 1 - BUENOS AIRES / MENDOZA

Disembark in Buenos Aires this morning and transfer directly to the domestic airport for your flight to Mendoza.  Upon arrival, transfer to the Posada Salentein estate.  Land now planted with grapes once bore witness to great deeds and heroism. This goodwill was the work of the indigenous people, Jesuit missionaries who came to the region, and important historical figures, such as General San Martin (Argentina, Chile & Peru's liberator from the Spanish regime).

Lunch is served at the estate before setting out for an excursion to the Killka Estate.  Killka wines stand out by their fruity character, good structure and varietal expression. The Malbec harvest of 2008 was awarded 90 points in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

Return to the Posada for dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 2 - MENDOZA

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning followed by a tour of the area.  In the foot of the Andes, Mendoza can be clearly recognized as the major wine region in Argentina. The region is notable for its very hot summers and plentiful sunlight. Added to this, sparse annual rainfall has encouraged the use of artificial irrigation creating perfectly tended oases of plentiful fruit.

End your tour with lunch and a visit at the Pulenta Estate.  Here, the 135 hectare-vineyard grows at 980 metres (3,215 feet) above sea level and enjoys an extraordinary climate and huge temperature ranges, all of which create favourable conditions for viticulture.

The vines, which were brought from France and Italy and planted by Antonio Pulenta, flourish at the feet of the majestic Andes Range.  Meltwater flowing from the mountains irrigates the Estate and its purity is reflected in the vigour, intensity and freshness of the fruit.

Return to the Posada Salentein for dinner and overnight stay.
