Thomson Smillie, Opera Impresario, Writer, and Stage Director

A Scotsman now living in Louisville, Kentucky, opera impresario Thomson Smillie has produced over one hundred operas and stage directed over thirty productions with companies in Europe and North America.  When not involved in productions, he spends his time writing, lecturing, and fostering a love of the performing arts.  His richly-illustrated presentations celebrate opera’s greatest composers and performers – and some of its most spectacular moments.

The author of a ‘virtual encyclopedia’ of opera for Naxos entitled Opera Explained, Thomson has also published a collection of the finest compliments entitled I Wish I’d Said That!  He writes a regular monthly column on the performing arts for Louisville Magazine.  His recent directing engagements have included Madama Butterfly in Owensboro, KY, and in Canton OH, The Pirates of Penzance in Louisville, KY, and earlier this year he produced and directed Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale for Canton Symphony.  Upcoming directing gigs include The Barber of Seville and in 2013 Tristan and Isolde for the Wagner Bicentenary.
