Shangri-La’s 202-room hotel occupies the top 11 floors of Marunouchi Trust Tower Main, a 37-floor, mixed-use building adjacent to Tokyo Station.

Design elements include a grand staircase, colorful carpets and Japanese accents. Dramatic flower arrangements, grace the public rooms and accommodations, which are reached after taking an express elevator to the 28th floor lobby where the views of Tokyo are mesmerizing.

Artwork is a prominent feature of this hotel. It showcases over 2,000 pieces of Chinese and regional artwork and more than 50 chandeliers handmade in the Czech Republic by Lasvit. Glass carved into the shape of ginkgo leaves-the symbol of Tokyo- decorate various chandeliers. Twenty of them are bespoke pieces crafted for the property.

Softly lighted hallways lead to accommodations influenced by Japanese design and culture. Rooms are large for Tokyo and have an entry foyer with full-length mirror and marble floor. The bedrooms are wrapped with windows surveying the city’s best skyscraper views. Counting the skyscrapers is a great way to lull oneself to sleep on the chaise longue by the window.

The included 2-night stay applies to new full-fare bookings made on or after June 24, 2015 only.

Originally built for the 1964 Olympics, the design concept for this lovely property was to preserve the beautiful landscape and stone wall of an Edo era daimyo mansion, while providing world-class accommodation.

From the fan motif in the carpeting and walls in the Fuyo banquet room to images of cranes in the entrance lobby, the hotel’s traditional Japanese décor expresses the founder’s desire to create a timeless ambience. Of course, he believed that every guest should be able to view Mount Fuji – a symbol of beauty in Japan. His vision was realized in the design of the Blue Sky Lounge on the 17th oor. After a recent renovation, the lounge, now operating as VIEW & DINING THE Sky, rotates 360 degrees in 70 minutes, affording guests a spectacular, panoramic view through full-height windows as they dine.

In addition to its ideal location and premier facilities, Hotel New Otani has been widely acclaimed for the quality of its services, earning it the honor of being selected as the primary venue for all three Tokyo summits. Heads of state and other VIPs from Japan and abroad frequently stay here, condent in the hotel’s enduring reputation as a premier international hotel.

01MIDOSA-C Kyoto in-depth

Departure: Day one in Osaka

Duration: 1.5 Days/1 Night

Re-join ship: Day two in Osaka

Reserve by: 90 Days Prior to the start of your Cruise

This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure requires advance booking through Silversea Reservations no later than 90 days prior to the start of your cruise. Requests received after this date may be accommodated on a space-available basis and the programme price is subject to change. Payment in full is due within 120 days prior to sailing. This programme is non-refundable if cancelled within 90 days of sailing.  A minimum number of participants is required to operate this programme.

Enjoy the World’s heritage city, Kyoto. From 794AD to 1600AD, this city was the center of Japan’s cultural and political aspect and succeeds their sprits and tradition. See the typical Japanese structures including a castle (for Samurai lord), temples and shrine, including three UNESCO World heritage sites. Dinner will be a memorable experience as you enjoy dining with Geisha.

DAY ONE – Osaka/Kyoto

Disembark the ship in Osaka and begin your overland excursion with an approximate 60-minute drive to Kyoto. Once the capital of Japan, is a sophisticated city on the island of Honshu with thousands of classical Buddhist temples.  It has many gardens, imperial palaces, Shinto shrines and traditional wooden houses.

Visit the Nijo Castle. This castle was built in 1611 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu.  The Hon-maru (main court) was burnt down in 1788, and the only original part remaining is the Ni-no-maru (second court). The present Hon-maru was re-built in 1827, and is a copy of the one that originally stood in the grounds of Kyoto Imperial Palace. This UNESCO World heritage castle is also famous for its many cultural treasures from the Momoyama Era (16th century), such as the Karamon (Chinese Gate), Ni-no-maru Garden and pictures on the doors in the building.

A western lunch will be served before, enjoy an exterior visit to the Kinkaku-ji Temple. The temple was built by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa as a villa in the Muromachi Period in 1397 and later converted as a temple. The temple was burned down in 1950, rebuilt in 1955. The temple is three-stories high with the second and the third story covered with pure gold foil, totaling 2 tons. The Golden Pavilion, situated in a serene, park-like setting is amongst Kyoto’s best known attractions.  The mirror reflection of the on the still pond in the garden presents a marvelous scene.

Centered on Mount Kiyomizu is the Kiyomizu-tera Temple. The main hall and the platform balcony in "Yosemune-zukuri style" (mortise and joint structure of pillars and beams) is very unique in that no nails have been used in the construction of the temple structure. Weather permitting the panoramic view of Kyoto City from the balcony is magnificent.

Next, proceed to the Okura Kyoto Hotel or Hotel Granvia Kyoto for check-in. Okura Kyoto Hotel is a luxury 16-story hotel is one of the finest traditional hotels in Kyoto. Take in the lavish décor of the spacious lobby and relax in your beautifully appointed room.  Hotel Granvia Kyoto has direct connection with JR Kyoto Station. "To be nice to the guests and environment" is the motto of this sophisticated hotel and sure to provide you with comfortable stay.

This evening you are invited to a traditional Geisha Dinner.  Geisha are professional entertainers who will join during dinner this evening, wearing Kimono. They are "traditional and iconic Japanese women" who have learned graceful behavior, traditional custom and various Japanese arts such as dance and playing musical instruments. Dinner with Geisha’s are very restricted even for Japanese people.  This is because they have a very strong traditions including first time guests are not allowed to make a reservation, this goes back many years. This time however, you will have the chance to enjoy this special evening.

Overnight at the Okura Hotel or Hotel Granvia Kyoto (or similar) – Kyoto.

DAY TWO – Kyoto/Osaka

After breakfast and check out, begin exploring this world-renowned city of temples and geishas. Kyoto was Japan’s capital and the emperor’s residence until 1868. Due to its historic value, Kyoto was spared from bombing raids during World War II. As a result, its countless temples and other priceless structures have remained intact.

A stop is made to visit the Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine.  This shrine was built in 714AD and is the head of more than 3,000 "Inari Shrines" from all over Japan.  It is famous for its plenty vermillion Torii the shrine’s entrance gate. The number of Torii is more than 2000.  There are also dozens of stone foxes, as the fox is considered the messenger of Inari and is traditionally seen to be sacred.

Afterwards relax and enjoy the hour scenic journey back to Osaka where you will be welcomed back to the ship.

Visit the Great Wall and walk the wooden promenade at Lake Kunming and the Summer Palace. Travel to Xian to see the emperor’s terracotta army, buried in underground vaults for centuries. End your exploration with an overview of Shanghai.

Major points of interest seen on this excursion to be highlighted in any marketing of your program:

Chance to see Great Wall and Forbidden City; Bullet train experience from port city to Beijing; Visit to Terra Cotta Warrior Museum.

DAY ONE – Tianjin/Beijing

Upon disembarking the ship at Tianjin International Cruise Home Port, transfer to the Tianjin train station and commence your overnight excursion to Beijing with a 30-minute ride on the high-speed train. Once you have arrived in the capital of the People’s Republic of China, transfer to a five-star hotel for a buffet lunch.

After lunch, proceed to Beijing’s national symbol, Tiananmen Square. Known as ‘Gate of Heavenly Peace’, the square is dominated by a gigantic portrait of Chairman Mao. Since imperial times, Tiananmen Square has always provided an impressive stage for declarations and key events in local history. In modern times, the solemn flag-raising ceremony has become a revered daily celebration. It was from the giant gate that Chairman Mao proclaimed the People’s Republic on October 1, 1949.

Your next visit will be to the legendary Forbidden City. Off-limits to the public for 500 years, the vast complex of this World Heritage Site was opened in 1949 as the Palace Museum. Within its walls lies a maze of palaces built between 1417 and 1420 as the residence of China’s emperors. With some 800 buildings and 9,000 rooms, maintenance and restoration are an on-going process.

Leaving the Forbidden City, drive to the Four Seasons Hotel for check-in. The hotel features luxury accommodations as well as fine dining venues. There is time to relax and freshen up before dinner.  You will have the choice to dine at one of the hotel’s three restaurants: Set menu dinner at Cai Yi Xuan (Chinese), Opus (Western), or Mio (Western).  All meals include choices of two drinks including soft drink, local beer or house wine.

Overnight accommodation at the Four Seasons Hotel – Beijing.

DAY TWO -The Great Wall/Beijing

After breakfast, begin today’s sightseeing program traveling out of the city and toward the Great Wall, reached following a drive of about two hours. With portions dating back nearly 2,000 years and an overall length of some 3,000 miles (4,828 kilometers), this spectacular structure remains a testament to the strength and perseverance of the Chinese people, justly deserving to be named as one the New Seven Wonders of the World. The roundtrip cable car ride (weather permitting) provides a leisurely and less strenuous way to take in the stunning scenery and the beauty of the Great Wall of China.

Leaving the wall, proceed to a local restaurant for Chinese style lunch and then head back to Beijing. En route, pass the Olympic Park for a view of the "Bird’s Nest" and "Water Cube", the new ingenious landmark structures built for the 2008 Olympics.

Discover vestiges of Old Beijing away from the bustling city during a pedicab trip through narrow alleyways of the hutong, where only, awning-covered vehicles and bicycles can manoeuvre. Some of these neighbourhoods date back to the Qing dynasty and residents still maintain a traditional lifestyle within walled courtyards. Step inside a family home and take a look behind the scenes. At the end of your hutong tour, rejoin your coach and return to the hotel. The remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure and dinner will be on your own this evening.

Overnight accommodation at the Four Seasons Hotel – Beijing.

DAY THREE – Beijing/Xian

After you have enjoyed breakfast and checked out, depart the hotel and transfer to Summer Palace.  Summer Palace is 7.4 miles (12 kilometres) northwest of the downtown.  It is the largest imperial garden in the world and a veritable museum of classical Chinese garden architecture.

The initial construction of the Summer Palace began in 1750, commissioned by Emperor Qianlong as a gift for his mother’s birthday. The construction took 15 years to complete. It had the name "Qingyi Yuan" (Garden of Clear Ripples) at that time. The plundering of foreign troops in 1860 destroyed most of the buildings. However, in 1888 Empress Dowager Cixi embezzled the funds of the Imperial Navy to renovate the garden.

After Chinese style lunch at a local restaurant, transfer to Beijing’s Capital Airport, where an afternoon flight takes you to Xian, home to the famed Terra Cotta Warriors.

Upon arrival at Xian Airport, you are met and transferred via coach to the downtown Xian and visit to one of the city’s landmark – the Ancient City Wall. The City Wall’s sheer mass, 39 feet (12 meters) high and nearly 9 miles (14 kilometres) long, may explain why the wall is considered the most complete fortified structure still standing. After a short drive arrive at deluxe Wyndham Grand Xian to check-in. In the evening, enjoy buffet dinner at hotel.

Overnight accommodation at Wyndham Grand Xian South – Xian.

DAY FOUR – Xian

After breakfast, drive to Xian’s most famous attraction – the museum that houses one of China’s supreme treasures, an army of a life-sized funeral honour guard.  Nothing prepares the visitor for the amazing sight of a stunningly well-preserved, life-size honour guard standing in ranks near the tomb of Emperor Ch’in Shih Huang-ti, who died in 210 BC. The soldiers were first discovered in 1974 by a local farmer who was digging a well. So far, three vaults have been excavated, the first alone containing more than 6,000 men and horses arranged in an imposing formation. Every soldier differs in facial features and expressions and most carry actual weapons of the day. The find is regarded by many as the most sensational archaeological discovery of the 20th century. A protective hangar constructed over them comprises now the Museum of the Terra Cotta Warriors.

Time permitting, a stunning audio-visual show can be viewed in a separate building and shops offer a wide variety of souvenir items.

After lunch at local restaurant, proceed to the downtown area where your guide will introduce you to the city’s major attractions, including the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the Great Mosque.

Start your afternoon tour with a visit to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. This 1,300-year-old structure from the golden days of the Tang Dynasty has long been the hallmark of Xian. The pagoda, along with the Drum Tower and Bell Tower are part of the Buddhist Temple of Grace complex located in the centre of Xian. At the Great Mosque, you can admire the pagoda-style architecture of this beautiful building which dates from the Tang Dynasty.

From here, return to Wyndham Grand Xian South to freshen up before departing for dumpling dinner and the cultural Tang Dynasty Show. This wonderful performance and classical entertainment depicts a variety of historical relics, providing insight and keeping alive the splendid culture of the ancient Tang Dynasty.

Overnight accommodation at Wyndham Grand Xian South – Xian.

DAY FIVE -Xian/Shanghai

Once you have enjoyed breakfast, check out and transfer to the Xian Airport for two-hour flight to Shanghai. Upon arrival in Shanghai, transfer to local restaurant for Chinese style lunch. Next, proceed to the 16th-century Yu Yuan Garden. This cultivated oasis captures the essence of the landscape art and architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. It has also served as the inspiration for the famous willow-pattern chinaware. High walls adorned with huge, stone dragons shelter teahouses, pavilions, rockeries and carp ponds. Make your way back to the coach by way of a small lake that is spanned by a picturesque zigzag bridge.

After the visit to Yu Yuan Gardens transfer to pier where the ship welcomes you back.

With its sheer limestone peaks jutting up from the Li River, Guilin is straight out of a traditional Chinese landscape painting, and remains one of China’s most breathtaking sights.

PLEASE NOTE:  When combined with your cruise itinerary, you may be required to secure a multi-entry visa for China well in advance of your voyage.  Please check with your travel professional for more details.

DAY 1 – HONG KONG / GUILIN

Your Silversea representative meets you at disembarkation in Hong Kong. As you make your way out of the city, stop for a visit to the Chi Lin Nunnery.  This tranquil retreat was first established in 1934, and rebuilt in 1990 using wooden frames and without a single nail.  It is the only temple complex of its kind remaining in Hong Kong today.  Adjacent to the nunnery is the Nan Lian Garden – well worth stopping in for a few moments of peace and quiet in the midst of urban Kowloon.   Continue on to the airport for your flight to Guilin (approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes).

Transfer upon arrival to the Shangri-La Guilin.  Take some time to settle in at the hotel.  Dinner tonight is served in the hotel.  Afterward, a short transfer takes you to Tianhu Pier where you can witness the ancient tradition of fishing with tamed and trained cormorants.

Return to the hotel.  Overnight at the Shangri-La – Guilin, China

DAY 2 – GUILIN

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before setting out for a scenic cruise on the renowned Li River.  Have your camera ready for photos of the uniquely shaped limestone peaks, verdant bamboo groves, and idyllic views along the way.  The portion of the river you see has been called a "one-hundred-mile natural art gallery".   A boxed lunch provided by your hotel can be enjoyed onboard.

Disembark the vessel at Yangshuo and spend some time enjoying the scenic and quiet countryside.  This glimpse of Southern China’s country life shows you the flora, fauna, rice paddies and small bridges that are not always visited by Western tourists.

From this idyllic setting, board an electric cart for a close look of the country life.  The fields, the buffalos, the zigzag lanes and the fresh air allow you escape from the noisy metropolis.   Your visit includes the Yulong River Scenic Area. The Chinese word ‘Yulong’ refers to ‘meeting a dragon’. Local legend has it that a dragon from the East Sea strolled across the Yulong River and, being deeply impressed by the attractive landscape, decided to stay there forever. The villagers living on the river bank saw the dragon several times, and hence the river is so named. The languid river is surrounded by a primitive, but pure, natural landscape, combined with green bamboo forests and rolling hills.

Return to the hotel at the end of the afternoon.  Take a moment to freshen up before dinner at a local restaurant.  Return to the hotel at the end of your meal for a well-deserved nights rest.

Overnight at the Shangri-La – Guilin, China

DAY 3 -  GUILIN / HONG KONG

Following breakfast at the hotel, check out of the hotel and start for the airport with a few interesting sites enroute.  First stop is Reed Flute Cave, named after the stand of bamboo near its entrance that were used to craft flutes.  Inside the cave there are more than 70 inscriptions written in ink, which date back as far as 792 AD in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). These ancient inscriptions tell us that the cave has been an attraction in Guilin for over 1,200 years.

Your next stop is at Elephant Trunk Hill, located at the confluence of the Li River and Peach Blossom River. It looks like a huge elephant stretching its trunk and drinking water, hence the name. Elephant Trunk Hill is considered by many to be the symbol of Guilin and its karst landscape.

At the end of your tour, stop for lunch at a local restaurant before bidding farewell to Guilin and checking in for the flight to Hong Kong.  Once there, return to the InterContinental and enjoy the evening, including dinner, at your leisure.

Overnight at the InterContinental Hotel – Hong Kong

Continue from here to enjoy dinner at a local restaurant followed by an authentic cultural show.
