Discover one of Southeast Asia’s almost forgotten countries, which recently started to attract ever more savvy and adventurous travellers. Discover Laos, one of Southeast Asia’s almost forgotten countries. Officially called Lao People’s Democratic Republic, the country has only recently begun to attract the attention of savvy and adventurous travelers due to Laos’ breathtakingly beautiful nature, long history, rich Buddhist culture, and laid back lifestyle. The country’s isolation is now quickly changing and the number of visitors is ever more increasing. On this Mid-Voyage Land Adventure you will have the opportunity for a brief visit to Laos’ capital, Vientiane and to Luang Prabang, the country’s showpiece and a World Heritage Site.

DAY ONE – Bangkok/ Luang Prabang

After a full breakfast, leave the ship and begin the hour’s drive to Bangkok Airport.  After check-in and security, board your two-hour flight to Laos, arriving in Luang Prabang.  Visa formalities are handled on arrival and your guide will be there to assist you to your transfer to the hotel. After check-in, your guide takes you to Prabath Tai to admire the beautiful sunset view of the Mekong River.  Next, explore the Street Night Market, home to a lovely collection of textiles, handmade by the local and hill tribe people surrounding Luang Prabang.   Take advantage of this stop to acquire a few local souvenirs, if you wish.

Return to the hotel where dinner is served before retiring for the evening.

Overnight accommodations are at Vicctoria Xienthong Palace – Luang Prabang

DAY TWO – Luang Prabang/ Vientiane

Optional: For early risers a special treat awaits. Near the hotel you can watch one of Luang Prabang’s most fascinating rituals as hundreds of orange-robed monks begin their walk at dawn to collect alms from faithful residents. It is a great opportunity for some very unusual and memorable photographs.

After breakfast and check-out, discover the major sites of Luang Prabang. The beautiful setting, splendid scenery and blend of foreign influences have earned the town top billing as the country’s showpiece. Located at an elevation of 2,296 feet (700 metres) above sea level, Luang Prabang is encircled by impressive mountains and wedged between the Mekong and Khan Rivers. As the former royal capital of the Lan Xang Kingdom, Luang Prabang has long been a centre of culture and preserved heritage.

The main attractions of this World Heritage Site can be seen within a short period of time and include ornate temples of and charming colonial architecture.  A stop at Wat Mai lets you admire the most richly decorated of all the temples in Luang Prabang. Visit the nearby Royal Palace Museum. Once the residence of the kings of Luang Prabang, exhibits feature a collection of personal memorabilia of the royal family, including photos, musical instruments and numerous gifts received from dignitaries of foreign countries. Many of the rooms have been preserved since the day of the revolution when the royal family was forced into exile. (Shoes have to be removed at the entrance to the museum.)

From here proceed to Wat Xieng Thong, the Temple of the Golden City and one of the most important temples in Laos. The temple’s rear wall is adorned with one of the best known artworks in Laos – the exquisite Tree of Life mosaic. Next, make your way to the airport for your 40-minute flight to Vientiane.

Upon arrival in Laos’ capital city, you are met and taken to the Settha Palace Hotel for lunch and check-in. Built in the 1930s, this Vientiane landmark hotel underwent extensive restoration and now serves once again as a testament to classical elegance and gracious service.  After lunch, enjoy an overview of Southeast Asia’s ‘biggest village’.  An interesting mix of Lao, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, French and American influences makes Vientiane a charming and fascinating capital.  An afternoon tour of the city will show you the major highlights. Most of the sites are in relatively close proximity of each other.

Begin with a visit to the most important national monument in Laos, Pha That Luang. This impressive gold-covered stupa is a symbol of both the Buddhist religion and Lao sovereignty. The exterior of the ‘Great Stupa’ resembles a fortress surrounded by high walls. The main stupa stands 148 feet (44 metres) tall and is covered with gold leaf. Legend has it that Ashokan missionaries from India erected a thâat or reliquary stupa here to enclose a piece of the Buddha’s breastbone as early as the 3rd century BC. Excavations have found no trace of this, but did find suggestion of a Khmer monastery that might have been built near here between the 11th and 13th centuries AD.  Continue for a photo stop at the imposing Patuxai Monument, or ‘Victory Gate’, touted as Vientiane’s own Arc de Triumph. It was built in the 1960s to commemorate those who fought in the struggle for independence from the French.

Dinner this evening is at the Khua Lao Restaurant where you are treated to a traditional dance show.

Overnight accommodation at the Settha Palace Hotel – Vientiane.

DAY THREE – Vientiane/ Ho Chi Minh City

Following an early breakfast and check-out, visit Wat Sisaket, the temple famous for its cloister wall with thousands of miniature Buddha statues. Vientiane’s oldest surviving monastery, it was built by King Anouvong in 1818, in the Siamese style.  Its grounds are richly planted with a variety of vegetation that is lovingly tended, so it becomes a restful retreat as well.  Next, visit Ho Phra Keo, ‘Altar of the Emerald Buddha’. Built as a royal chapel and repository for the celebrated Emerald Buddha which Loatians took from northern Thailand in the 16th century (it was taken back to Bangkok two centuries later), this temple was restored to its former glory in 1993.

Conclude your Laos Discovery with a lunch-time flight to Ho Chi Minh City, via Phnom Penh. A light meal is served in-flight. Upon arrival in Vietnam, you are met and assisted with arrival visa formalities. Then board your transfer coach that returns you to your awaiting ship.

Please note: This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure requires an extensive amount of walking and climbing of steps at all sites visited, making the tour unsuitable for guests with limited mobility or those utilising a wheelchair. Visas for both Laos and Vietnam are included and will be issued upon arrival at the airports. Guests will need to bring two passport-sized photos (2"X2") with them. This Land Adventure involves touring outdoors and guests may be exposed to warm/hot, humid and/or wet weather and insects; please pack accordingly. Lightweight clothing, a sunhat, sun block, insect repellent and sunglasses are imperative. Bring a jacket or shawl for the cooler region of Luang Prabang.  Comfortable walking shoes that are easy to slip on and off are essential.  Out of respect, dress modestly, with any skirts or pants well below the knee and shoulders must be covered for visits to Buddhist shrines. Some temples and the Royal Palace Museum require shoes be removed at the entrance.  Remember to bring your camera. Monks may be at the sites; their picture may only be taken after obtaining their permission and women may not touch monks. US dollars are well accepted by most vendors; local ATMs are available in some locations visited however you should carry small change. Bargaining is common at markets. Airlines restrict baggage to 44 lb (20 kg) per person; hand luggage cannot exceed 11 lb (5 kg) in weight, should smaller aircraft be utilised (at the discretion of the airline). Once the capital of the Khmer Empire from 800 AD to approximately 1200, Angkor spreads out over an area of about 40 miles (63 km). The city and its famous temples were abandoned in the early 15th century and remained unknown to the outside world until 1860, when a French botanist stumbled upon them in the jungle overgrowth. Today, travellers flock to Angkor to see this spectacular temple city, rated among the world’s premier architectural sites and since 1992 on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Your Mid-Voyage Land Adventure concludes on Day Three with an exploration of Cham civilization and the pretty ancient river town of Hoi An, also a UNESCO site.

DAY ONE – Ho Chi Minh City / Siem Reap

Depart the ship after lunch and transfer to the airport for the one-hour flight to Siem Reap. Upon arrival, drive to your hotel and check-in to the five-star Sokha Angkor Hotel. Located in the heart of Siem Reap, the hotel’s decor is inspired by the local culture. Your photograph will be taken at the hotel and your temple pass issued, facilitating admission to the temple sites next morning. Dinner this evening is served poolside and is enhanced by a performance of lovely Apsara dancers.

Overnight accommodation is at the Sokha Angkor Hotel – Siem Reap.

DAY TWO – Siem Reap /Angkor Wat / Da Nang

Begin your day with the drive to the Angkor site to visit to Ta Phrom. The temple is reached via a footpath through the forest and your first glimpse is of an extraordinary sight. The invading jungle-like growth has been left in place. Serpentine trunks of towering fig trees wind around the temple ruins, across walls and through doorways, creating an incredible atmosphere. Ta Phrom is also featured in scenes of Angelina Jolie’s movie, Tomb Raider.

As you enter and exit the sites of Angkor, you may notice children selling various souvenirs.  To promote education of the area’s youth, Silversea has made a donation on your behalf to the school of the local orphanage to encourage education and the betterment of these children.

Return to the Sokha Hotel to check-out and collect your belongings and to enjoy a buffet-style lunch before proceeding to Angkor Thom, the former capital of the Khmer Empire. King Jayavarman VII established Angkor Thom in the late-12th century. It spans 3.5 square miles (9.065 square km), and features 25-foot-high (7.6-metres-high) gates at each of the cardinal points.

After entering via the narrow South Gate, continue to Angkor Thom’s most significant sites, including Bayon, a temple known for its 49 towers and a terrace full of colossal heads with smiling faces. The stunning architecture and unusual décor makes Bayon one of the most visited sites at Angkor Thom. Other highlights include the Terrace of Elephants and the Leper King, representing one of Angkor’s many mysteries.

Exit the site of Angkor Thom and head to Angkor Temple.  Angkor Wat is the most famous of the Angkor sites and the largest Buddhist monument ever built. It spans an area of 500 acres (202 hectares), and is surrounded by a 660-foot-wide (201-meter-wide) moat. The construction required some 385,000 workers and 40,000 elephants over a 35-year period. The site remained covered by dense jungle growth until the late-19th century, when French archaeologists began a long restoration process. While some sections are still in ruins, others are used for worship and are occupied by Buddhist monks.

Entrance to this majestic and vast complex is via a long causeway across the moat. Then begin your exploration with a guided walking tour through corridors and courtyards. The walls are covered with bas-reliefs featuring battle scenes, dancing deities and visions of punishment in hell and rewards in paradise. The temple’s central building is three stories high and accessible via a steep staircase (only recommended for very fit and agile guests).

At the conclusion of your visit, re-board the coach and travel to the airport for your early evening flight to Da Nang.  After claiming your luggage, you are met and transferred to the Grand Mercure Hotel for dinner before your night’s stay.

Overnight accommodation is at the Grand Mercure Hotel – DaNang

DAY THREE – Da Nang / Hoi An / Chan May

After an early breakfast at the hotel, check-out and board your coach for the short drive to the Cham Museum.  Visit the Cham Museum, a rather primitive yet altogether charming museum boasting an extensive array of Cham artefacts. The museum’s more than 300 pieces are displayed outdoors, which proves to be an appropriate space for its collection of temple decorations and sandstone sculptures. The exhibits represent four time periods and are named after the geographic regions where the pieces were found.

Your next destination is Hoi An, a pretty river town, approximately 20 miles (32 kilometres) south of Da Nang that has earned a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. The picturesque river town has remained unchanged for centuries. Initially an important trading port, Hoi An boasts some of Vietnam’s most historic architecture as well as colourful temples and ancient community houses, much of which remains unchanged after centuries.

Upon arrival at Hoi An, your coach parks at the Hoi An Hotel, from where you proceed on foot to the centre of ancient Hoi An. Stop at the small, local museum, in a traditional merchant’s house, known for its fine collection of objects relating to the town’s heydays as an important trading port.   From the museum, continue with your walking tour to the local market for a look at the colourful display of produce, fruits, flower and fish.  Next, head toward the Covered Bridge and take a stroll across for a visit of an ancient home on the other side. (Visiting the upper floor of the building requires climbing a flight of stairs.)  A brief stop at this ornate Chinese temple dedicated to Thien Hau, Goddess of the Sea, is made before walking back to the coach parking area.

Afterwards sit down for a traditional lunch at the Nam Long Deluxe Restaurant.

On the drive to the ship, pause to take photographs at Marble Mountain, the famous collection of five marble and limestone formations that take the shape of a dragon at rest.  Your Land Adventure concludes at the port of Chan May where the ship awaits.

Please note:    This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure requires an extensive amount of walking and climbing of steps at all sites visited, making the tour unsuitable for guests with limited mobility or those utilising a wheelchair. A Cambodian visa is included and will be issued upon arrival at Siem Reap Airport. Guests will need to bring two passport-sized photos (2"X2") with them. This Land Adventure involves touring outdoors and guests may be exposed to warm/hot, humid and/or wet weather and insects; please pack accordingly. Lightweight clothing, comfortable shoes, a sunhat, sun block, insect repellent and sunglasses are imperative.  Remember also to bring your camera. Angkor Temple is still an active place of worship. Dress modestly, with any skirts or pants well below the knee and shoulders must be covered. Scarves and skirts are NOT available for those who have their legs or shoulders exposed and access to the top floor of the Angkor Temple will not be permitted. Monks will be at the sites; their picture may only be taken after obtaining their permission and women may not touch monks. US dollars are well accepted by most vendors; local ATMs are available in some locations visited. Airlines restrict baggage to 44 lb (20 kg) per person; hand luggage cannot exceed 11 lb (5 kg) in weight, should smaller aircraft be utilised (at the discretion of the airline). The tour sequence may vary in the event of flight changes; order of sites and/or the itinerary may change.

This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure is one of Silversea’s "Good Citizen" tours. A portion of your Land Adventure cost is donated to the school of the Siem Reap Children’s Orphanage. If you wish, you may bring school supplies to add to your donation.  Our representatives will ensure these are delivered to the school’s directors for a very welcomed distribution. Please refrain from giving money to children begging at the sites as this encourages the practice.

Fascinating Hanoi is nearly 1,000 years old and the proud capital of Vietnam. With its many attractions, an overnight stay is a must on any visit to this dynamic destination. Situated on both sides of the Red River, the city with a population of roughly 6.5 million is the country’s economic, cultural and political centre. Beautiful French colonial buildings stand next to traditional houses, and thousands of scooters, motorcycles and bicycles clutter the streets, vying for space with cars and buses. Take in a little of both its ancient and modern history. Upon your return to Ha Long Bay, experience the natural wonder of this UNESCO site on your junk cruise, before re-joining the ship.

Explore ancient and modern Hanoi with more time to take in the many sites that make Vietnam’s capital and second largest city a bucket-list destination for so many.  The name Ha Long Bay, or ‘where the dragon descends into the sea,’ has its origin in an ancient legend, according to which a huge dragon descended and assisted the Vietnamese in their fight against northern invaders. After victory, the dragon and its young remained, turning into a fence of rocky islands to protect the locals. Even today, sailors and locals still claim sightings of a giant sea monster. Some of the outcroppings, caves and grottoes have a most exotic appearance. They have been given such names as Face Island, Isle of Wonders and Isle of Surprise, among others.

DAY ONE – Ha Long Bay / Hanoi

A cruise by local junk offers a wonderful opportunity to fully enjoy this magical scenery. After tendering ashore, your junk is ready for boarding and then you head out for a cruise past craggy outcrops and strange images that rise from the sea.

Disembark the junk for the four-hour drive to the capital of Vietnam, Hanoi. For your comfort, guests travel in small groups, generally in vans. Boasting of glorious French colonial architecture and numerous lakes, with a little blending of east and west amongst bicycle-cluttered streets, the city is the jewel in Vietnam’s crown. The upgraded road from the pier to Hanoi offers ample chances to take photos of buffaloes and rice fields, farmers working together on the cooperatives, mountains, coal mines, old factories, and former battlefields, as you pass through the countryside.

On arrival in the city, check-in at the Hanoi InterContinental and after freshening-up, meet for a relaxing dinner within the hotel.

Overnight at the Hanoi InterContinental Hotel (or similar) – Hanoi

DAY TWO – Hanoi / Ha Long Bay

After an early breakfast at the hotel, check-out and continue with your sightseeing program, covering some of the city’s major highlights including Ba Dinh Square which is dominated by the impressive marble and granite tomb where the father of the country lies in state.  The huge square is dominated by the monumental shrine containing the embalmed body of the ‘Father of the Country.’ Together with the former Presidential Palace and one-time French governor’s residence, the square offers great photo opportunities. Due to long lines and frequent closures, a visit to the mausoleum is not planned. For the Vietnamese, filing past ‘Uncle Ho’ in his glass sarcophagus is a somber experience in this spiritual center of their independence.

Continue your tour with a walk through the garden located behind the Mausoleum. Stroll past tranquil lotus ponds to Ho’s stilt house. The cottage is a simple teak building resembling the homes of the ethnic hill tribes. Take a look inside this humble abode, which Ho preferred to living in the palace.

Continue to visit the Temple of Literature dedicated to Confucianism and founded in 1076 during the Ly Dynasty.  The temple complex is the site of the country’s first university, which is the pride of the nation and the most important educational center. The unique entrance gate and 82 stone steles bear witness to an early high level of education at a time when the country gained independence from Chinese occupation. Take a walk through walled courtyards with ancient pavilions and enter the ornate main shrine dedicated to famous teachers and Confucius, where ‘men of letters’ once recited their poetry.

Carry on to Hoa Lo, translated as ‘Hell’s hole’, built by the French in the late 19th century to house Vietnamese prisoners. Nicknamed ‘Hanoi Hilton’ by the Americans during the Second Indochina War, much of the prison was demolished in 1996. What remains is a museum depicting the horrors of the imprisonment of the Vietnamese and many American pilots including Senator John McCain.  Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

After lunch, drive past the Hoan Kiem Lake. The central location of the lake offers great panoramic views. Residents credit Sword Lake with many myths and legends, including huge tortoises that inhabit these waters. In the middle of the lake, on a tiny island reached by a footbridge, stands the Ngoc Son Pagoda, dedicated to Tran Hung Dao, a hero who fought against Kublai Khan’s troops in the 13th century.

From the lake, a short walk will take you to the Thang Long Theater.

At the Thang Long Theater you will be treated to a delightful performance of a unique Vietnamese tradition. The water puppetry was created by kings of the Ly Dynasty, a form of entertainment that is still very popular. The puppets are handled by artists pulling strings and poles under water. Acting out legends, the show is accompanied by folk music and special lighting.

To conclude your day in Hanoi, make a stop to the Old Quarter. Named for the original 36 streets that formed the quarter, this is the most crowded and busy part of downtown. In streets named each after a particular trade they once represented, merchants and buyers carry out a flurry of activities. Today, this is a shopping mecca for visitors and residents alike. While walking through this maze of alleys, you may well find a nice souvenir at a good price.  Afterwards realx on the 3.5-4 hour journey back to the ship.

Please note: This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure requires an extensive amount of walking and climbing of steps at all sites visited, making the tour unsuitable for guests with limited mobility or those utilising a wheelchair. An overnight Vietnamese visa will be issued upon departure and is included in the cost of this program. This Land Adventure involves touring outdoors and guests may be exposed to warm/hot, humid and/or wet weather and insects; please pack accordingly in a small overnight case. Casual, lightweight clothing, comfortable shoes, a sunhat, sun block and sunglasses are imperative. Remember also to bring your camera. US dollars are well accepted by most vendors; local ATMs are available in some locations visited. The tour sequence may vary and traffic patterns may affect tour timings; order of sites may change. Anticipate crowds at Ba Dinh Square. The duration of the drive between Ha Long Bay and Hanoi is approximately 3.5-4 hours in each direction. Comfort stops are made along the way and drive time can vary. Operation of the junk cruise is subject to favourable sea and/or visibility conditions.

Programme Includes:
