4NT PRE-CRUISE SCENIC GUILIN With its sheer limestone peaks jutting up from the Li River, Guilin is straight out of a traditional Chinese landscape painting, and remains one of China's most breathtaking sights.   DAY 1 - HONG KONG Arriving…

With its sheer limestone peaks jutting up from the Li River, Guilin is straight out of a traditional Chinese landscape painting, and remains one of China’s most breathtaking sights.

DAY 1 – HONG KONG

Arriving at  Hong Kong International Airport, you are met by the local Silversea representative and transferred to the InterContinental Hotel overlooking Victoria Harbour.  Following check-in, the balance of the day is at leisure. Dinner is on your own account.

Overnight at the InterContinental Hotel – Hong Kong

Please note: Check-in time at the hotel is 2:00PM.  If your flight arrives in the early morning, you may wish to guarantee your room for check-in upon arrival for an additional cost.

DAY 2 – HONG KONG / GUILIN

Following breakfast this morning, check out and transfer to the airport for your flight to Guilin.  Transfer upon arrival to the Sheraton Hotel Guilin.  Take some time to settle in at the hotel.  Dinner tonight is served in the hotel.  Afterward, a short transfer takes you to Tianhu Pier where you can witness the ancient tradition of fishing with tamed and trained cormorants.

Return to the hotel.  Overnight at the Sheraton Hotel – Guilin, China

DAY 3 – GUILIN

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before setting out for a scenic cruise on the renowned Li River.  Have your camera ready for photos of the uniquely shaped limestone peaks, verdant bamboo groves, and idyllic views along the way.  The portion of the river you see has been called a "one-hundred-mile natural art gallery".   A boxed lunch provided by your hotel can be enjoyed onboard.

Disembark the vessel at Yangshuo and spend some time enjoying the scenic and quiet countryside.  This glimpse of Southern China’s country life shows you the flora, fauna, rice paddies and small bridges that are not always visited by Western tourists.

From this idyllic setting, board your transportation for a closer look at country life.  The fields, the water buffalos, the zigzag lanes and the fresh air allow you escape from the noisy metropolis.   Your visit includes a stop at the Yulong River Scenic Area. The Chinese word ‘Yulong’ refers to ‘meeting a dragon’. Local legend has it that a dragon from the East Sea strolled across the Yulong River and, being deeply impressed by the attractive landscape, decided to stay there forever. The villagers living on the river bank saw the dragon several times, and hence the river is so named. The languid river is surrounded by a primitive, but pure, natural landscape, combined with green bamboo forests and rolling hills.

Return to the hotel at the end of the afternoon.  Take a moment to freshen up before dinner at a local restaurant.  Return to the hotel at the end of your meal for a well-deserved nights rest.

Overnight at the Sheraton Hotel – Guilin, China

DAY 4 -  GUILIN / HONG KONG

Following breakfast at the hotel, check out of the hotel and start for the airport with a few interesting sites enroute.  First stop is Reed Flute Cave, named after the stand of bamboo near its entrance that were used to craft flutes.  Inside the cave there are more than 70 inscriptions written in ink, which date back as far as 792 AD in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). These ancient inscriptions tell us that the cave has been an attraction in Guilin for over 1,200 years.

Your next stop is at Elephant Trunk Hill, located at the confluence of the Li River and Peach Blossom River. It looks like a huge elephant stretching its trunk and drinking water, hence the name. Elephant Trunk Hill is considered by many to be the symbol of Guilin and its karst landscape.

At the end of your tour, stop for lunch at a local restaurant before bidding farewell to Guilin and checking in for the flight to Hong Kong.  Once there, return to the InterContinental and enjoy the balance of the day, including dinner, at your leisure.

Overnight at the InterContinental Hotel – Hong Kong

DAY 2 – BEIJING

Following breakfast at the hotel, depart for a visit to The Forbidden City where for more than 500 years, 24 emperors and two dynasties ruled the Middle Kingdom from its 200 acres. From here you make your way to Tian’anmen Square, the world’s largest square.  Tian’anmen Square owes little to the grand imperial dynasties and everything to the dynasty of Mao Zedong whose tomb resides here.  After lunch at a local restaurant, continue on to the Temple of Heaven which UNESCO describes as "a masterpiece of architecture and landscape design."

Toward the end of the afternoon, return to the hotel for a little relaxation, before stepping out for a roast duck dinner at a fashionable local restaurant.

Overnight at the Four Seasons – Beijing, China

DAY 3 – BEIJING

After breakfast today visit one of the greatest wonders of the world – The Great Wall.  With portions dating back nearly 2,000 years, and at times stretching as far as the eye can see, this spectacular structure remains a testament to the strength and perseverance of the Chinese people.  Visit a section of restored wall that is perched on a high ridge above serene wooded canyons that is accessed via cable car.  Lunch is served at a local restaurant in the area. This afternoon, continue on to the Summer Palace, an expansive park-like imperial retreat dating from the Yuan dynasty.  As you return to the hotel stop for photos of two of the iconic buildings from the 2008 Beijing Olympics – the Bird’s Nest and the Aqua Cube.  The balance of the evening and dinner is at your leisure.

Overnight at the Four Seasons – Beijing, China

DAY 4 – BEIJING / XI’AN

Leave your hotel and Beijing very early this morning for the flight (approximately 2 hour 15 minutes) to Xi’an.  Upon arrival at Xi’an, your local Silversea representative meets you and begins your introduction to the fascinating museum that houses the famous Terra cotta Warriors – silent sentinels, an army of thousands of hand-shaped, life-size terra-cotta warriors who were to be the first Qin emperor’s garrison in the afterlife.  After the fall of the Qin, the terra cotta army was forgotten and only rediscovered in 1974.  Enjoy lunch at the museum restaurant.

Following your visit, continue on to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda.  This impressive 209-ft high Buddhist pagoda is one of the best-known in the country.

As the afternoon comes to a close, proceed to the Sofitel Renmin Square for check-in and leisure time before dinner. This evening, dine and enjoy the entertainment at a Tang Dynasty Cultural Show.

Overnight at the Sofitel Renmin Square – Xi’an, China

DAY 5 – XI’AN / HONG KONG

Following breakfast this morning in Xi’an, leave the hotel and transfer to the airport for your flight to Hong Kong (approximately 2 hours, 30 minutes). An in-flight lunch will be served. Once there you are met by the local Silversea representative.  As you make your way into the heart of the city, stop for a visit to the Chi Lin Nunnery.  This tranquil retreat was first established in 1934, and rebuilt in 1990 using wooden frames and without a single nail.  It is the only temple complex of its kind remaining in Hong Kong today.  Adjacent to the nunnery is the Nan Lian Garden – well worth stopping in for a few moments of peace and quiet in the midst of urban Kowloon.  From here, continue on to the Inter-Continental Hong Kong where the remainder of the day and dinner are on your own.

Between the 9th and 13th centuries, Angkor was the capital of the Khmer empire, a colossal city renowned for its superb architecture and sculptures, vast lakes and temples.  Hidden in the jungles of Cambodia until the late 19th century, it’s one of the world’s greatest wonders, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Silversea’s Mid-Voyage Land Adventure gives you an in-depth look at the Angkor Wat site that includes many structures still intact, including the grand Angkor temple.

Once the capital of the Khmer Empire from 800 AD to approximately 1200, Angkor spreads out over an area of about 40 miles (63 km). The city and its famous temples were abandoned in the early 15th century and remained unknown to the outside world until 1860, when a French botanist stumbled upon them in the jungle overgrowth. Today, travellers flock to Angkor to see this spectacular temple city, rated among the world’s premier architectural sites and since 1992 on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Your Mid-Voyage Land Adventure begins with an exploration of Cham civilization and the city of Da Nang before you travel to Cambodia to explore Angkor Wat.

Experience the magical Angkor Temple City, acclaimed as being one of the most incredible ancient religious monuments in the World and Asia’s most famous archaeological attraction.

DAY ONE – Chan May/Da Nang/Siem Reap

Depart the ship immediately after arrival and begin your day with the hour’s drive to Da Nang, Vietnam’s third largest city.  It was on Da Nang’s coast where the first U.S. troops landed on March 8, 1965. Despite its war-torn history, Da Nang is one of the most progressive cities in Vietnam.  Among its highlights is the renowned Cham Museum, housing close to 300 Cham sculptures.  Stop here for a guided look at Cham history before arriving at the Embroidery Workshop to see the artisans who can spend months on a single piece, with embroidery themes that include Vietnamese daily life and literature. The ancestor of this embroidery workshop came from Hue and trained many generations of workers, dedicated to this form of art.

Next, a short drive takes you to Marble Mountain for a brief photo stop.  King Minh Mang in 1837 named the mountains of Ngu Hanh after the five basic elements of the universe: Kim mountain (metal); Moc mountain (wood); Thuy mountain (water); Tho mountain (earth); Hoa mountain (Fire); (Hoa mountain consist of two peaks). Then, proceed to Marble Mountain Village.  Here, thousands of stone statues have been created by the skilful hands of the area’s talented workers.  Most marble is transported here from Thanh Hoa province.  Of particular note are the different coloured pieces, very interesting to most stone lovers.

Complete your look at Da Nang with a stop at Sandy Beach.  Often referred to as "China Beach", Sandy Beach is more than 25 miles (40 kilometres) long.  During the Vietnam War, American Marines and South Korean troops used this area as a base camp.  Since then, many famous resorts have been built along the beach.  Sip a local drink, relax and enjoy the sea breeze, sun and sand.  If you feel adventurous, climb the nearby mountain with more than 100 steps to see both the area pagoda and caverns, or just to admire the view of Da Nang, before a light lunch at one of the resorts.

After lunch, the coach delivers you to Da Nang Airport for your onward flight to Cambodia.  Upon arrival, you are met and transferred to the five-star Sokha Angkor Hotel. Located in the heart of Siem Reap, the hotel’s decor is inspired by the local culture. Check-in and relax before dining at the hotel. (Your photograph will be taken at the hotel and your temple pass issued, facilitating admission to the temple sites next morning.)

Overnight accommodation is at the Sokha Angkor Hotel – Siem Reap.

DAY TWO – Siem Reap/Angkor Wat

After breakfast, begin your day with a visit to Angkor Wat temple, the most famous of the Angkor sites and the largest Buddhist monument ever built. It spans an area of 500 acres (202 hectares), and is surrounded by a 660-foot-wide (201-meter-wide) moat. The construction required some 385,000 workers and 40,000 elephants over a 35-year period. The site remained covered by dense jungle growth until the late-19th century, when French archaeologists began a long restoration process. While some sections are still in ruins, others are used for worship and are occupied by Buddhist monks.

Entrance to this majestic and vast complex is via a long causeway across the moat. Then begin your exploration with a guided walking tour through corridors and courtyards. The walls are covered with bas-reliefs featuring battle scenes, dancing deities and visions of punishment in hell and rewards in paradise. The temple’s central building is three stories high and accessible via a steep staircase (only recommended for very fit and agile guests).

After an extensive visit of approximately two hours, continue your exploration with a visit to the Angkor National Museum as a preview to the Angkor temple. Through interactive exhibits you will be able to gain a deeper understanding of tradition and different beliefs of the ancient empire. Statues, remnants from the great temples themselves, as well as artefacts depict all manner of social customs throughout the evolution of the unique Khmer civilization.

Next, head to a local hotel where your buffet-style lunch awaits. Then proceed to Angkor Thom.

Angkor Thom, the former capital of the Khmer Empire. King Jayavarman VII established Angkor Thom in the late-12th century. It spans 3.5 square miles (90.65 square km), and features 25-foot-high (7.6-metres-high) gates at each of the cardinal points.

After entering via the narrow South Gate, continue to Angkor Thom’s most significant sites, including Bayon, a temple known for its 49 towers and a terrace full of colossal heads with smiling faces. The stunning architecture and unusual décor makes Bayon one of the most visited sites at Angkor Thom. Other highlights include the Terrace of Elephants and the Leper King, representing one of Angkor’s many mysteries.

Exit the site of Angkor Thom for the short drive to Ta Phrom. The temple is reached via a footpath through the forest and your first glimpse is of an extraordinary sight. The invading jungle-like growth has been left in place. Serpentine trunks of towering fig trees wind around the temple ruins, across walls and through doorways, creating an incredible atmosphere. Ta Phrom is also featured in scenes of Angelina Jolie’s movie, Tomb Raider.  As you enter and exit the sites of Angkor, you may notice children selling various souvenirs.  To promote education of the area’s youth, Silversea has made a donation on your behalf to the school of the local orphanage to encourage education and the betterment of these children.

As the day concludes, return to the hotel. Dinner this evening is enhanced by a performance of lovely Apsara dancers.

Overnight at Sokha Angkor Resort Hotel – Siem Reap.

DAY THREE – Siem Reap/Ho Chi Minh City

Following breakfast and check out, you are transferred to the airport for a morning flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Upon arrival and following Immigration formalities, a transfer coach will take you to the port and your awaiting ship.

Please note:    This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure requires an extensive amount of walking and climbing of steps at all sites visited, making the tour unsuitable for guests with limited mobility or those utilising a wheelchair. A Cambodian visa is included and will be issued upon arrival at Siem Reap Airport. Guests will need to bring two passport-sized photos (2"X2") with them. This Land Adventure involves touring outdoors and guests may be exposed to warm/hot, humid and/or wet weather and insects; please pack accordingly. Lightweight clothing, comfortable shoes, a sunhat, sun block, insect repellent and sunglasses are imperative.  Remember also to bring your camera. Angkor Temple is still an active place of worship. Dress modestly, with any skirts or shorts well below the knee and shoulders must be covered. Monks will be at the sites; their picture may only be taken after obtaining their permission and women may not touch monks. US dollars are well accepted by most vendors; local ATMs are available in some locations visited. Airlines restrict baggage to 44 lb. (20 kg) per person; hand luggage cannot exceed 11 lb. (5 kg) in weight, should smaller aircraft be utilised (at the discretion of the airline). The tour sequence may vary in the event of flight changes; order of sites and/or itinerary may change. This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure is one of Silversea’s "Good Citizen" tours. A portion of your Land Adventure cost is donated to the school of the Siem Reap Children’s Orphanage. If you wish, you may bring school supplies to add to your donation.  Our representatives will ensure these are delivered to the school’s directors for a very welcomed distribution. Please refrain from giving money to children begging at the sites as this encourages the practice.

Discover Laos, one of Southeast Asia’s almost forgotten countries. Officially called Lao People’s Democratic Republic, the country has only recently begun to attract the attention of savvy and adventurous travelers due to Laos’ breathtakingly beautiful nature, long history, rich Buddhist culture, and laid back lifestyle. The country’s isolation is quickly giving way to change and the number of visitors is ever more increasing. On this Mid-Voyage Land Adventure you will have the opportunity for a brief visit to Laos’ capital, Vientiane and to Luang Prabang, the country’s showpiece and a World Heritage Site, situated 2,296 feet (700 metres) above sea level amid a backdrop of scenic mountains.

DAY ONE – Ho Chi Minh City / Vientiane

Depart the ship in Ho Chi Minh City and transfer to the airport for your afternoon flight to Vientiane, via Phnom Penh. Upon arrival in Laos’ capital city, you are met and taken to the Settha Palace Hotel for check-in. Built in the 1930s, this Vientiane landmark hotel underwent extensive restoration and now serves once again as a testament to classical elegance and gracious service. After settling in, join your fellow tour members for dinner at the hotel.

Overnight accommodation at the Settha Palace Hotel – Vientiane.

DAY TWO – Vientiane / Luang Prabang

Following breakfast and check-out, enjoy an overview of Southeast Asia’s ‘biggest village’.  An interesting mix of Lao, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, French and American influences, makes Vientiane a charming and fascinating capital.  A morning tour of the city will show you the major highlights, ending at the airport. Most of the sites are in relatively close proximity of each other.

Visit Wat Sisaket, the temple famous for its cloister wall with thousands of miniature Buddha statues. Vientiane’s oldest surviving monastery, it was built by King Anouvong in 1818, in the Siamese style.  Its grounds are richly planted with a variety of vegetation that is lovingly tended, so it becomes a restful retreat as well. Next, proceed to the most important national monument in Laos, Pha That Luang. This impressive gold-covered stupa is a symbol of both the Buddhist religion and Lao sovereignty. The exterior of the ‘Great Stupa’ resembles a fortress surrounded by high walls. The main stupa stands 148 feet (44 metres) tall and is covered with gold leaf.  Legend has it that Ashokan missionaries from India erected a thâat or reliquary stupa here to enclose a piece of the Buddha’s breastbone as early as the 3rd century BC. Excavations have found no trace of this, but did find suggestion of a Khmer monastery that might have been built near here between the 11th and 13th centuries AD.  Before heading to the airport, stop for photos at the imposing Patuxai Monument, or ‘Victory Gate’, touted as Vientiane’s own Arc de Triumph. It was built in the 1960s to commemorate those who fought in the struggle for independence from the French.

Arriving at Vientiane airport, check-in for a 40-minute flight to Luang Prabang. Upon arrival, you are met and transferred to the Vitoria Xiengthong Palace Hotel for check-in and lunch. This five-star hotel was the last residence of the Laos Royal Family. Located in the heart of Luang Prabang, surrounded by the golden spires of the town’s famous Buddhist temples, this beautiful boutique property has been lovingly restored to its former glory, and once more sits proudly on the banks of the Mekong River.  Look out upon the majestic Wat Xiengthong – the town’s most famous temple, or simply sit back and soak up the ambience of this UNESCO protected palace, the perfect place to discover the wonder and charm of Luang Prabang – the Jewel of Indochina.

After lunch, a trip to Kuang Si Falls some 18 miles (30 kilometres) out of town follows a road that winds through hills with spectacular views, terraced rice fields and farmlands. Closer to the falls the weather gets a bit cooler due to the higher elevation and its forest location. From the parking area, a short hike on a well maintained forest trail leads up some 279 feet (85 metres) to the view point of the falls. Cascades, typical of travertine waterfalls, are intermingled with basins and pools. Be careful around the falls area as the ground may be wet and slippery. Photographers will enjoy the opportunity for pictures. Then retrace your steps down to the parking area, where souvenir shops line the square.

Your return trip to Luang Prabang takes in a stop at Wat Prabath, a Meditation Temple situated on a hillside from where you can enjoy lovely views and the opportunity to watch the sunset. Often, orange-clad monks can be seen mingling on the grounds of Wat Prabath. Back downtown, you may want to take a stroll through the night market before returning to the hotel. This evening, dinner will be served at one of Luang Prabang’s popular restaurants.

Overnight accommodation at Vitoria Xiengthong Palace Hotel – Luang Prabang.

DAY THREE – Luang Prabang / Bangkok

Optional: For early risers a special treat awaits. Near the hotel you can watch one of Luang Prabang’s most fascinating rituals as hundreds of orange-robed monks begin their walk at dawn to collect alms from faithful residents. It is a great opportunity for some very unusual and memorable photographs.

After breakfast and check-out, discover the major sites of Luang Prabang. The beautiful setting, splendid scenery and blend of foreign influences have earned the town top billing as the country’s showpiece. Located at an elevation of 2,296 feet (700 metres) above sea level, Luang Prabang is encircled by impressive mountains and wedged between the Mekong and Khan Rivers. As the former royal capital of the Lan Xang Kingdom, Luang Prabang has long been a centre of culture and preserved heritage.

The main attractions of this World Heritage Site can be seen within a short period of time and include ornate temples of and charming colonial architecture.  A stop at Wat Mai lets you admire the most richly decorated of all the temples in Luang Prabang.

Next, visit the nearby Royal Palace Museum. Once the residence of the kings of Luang Prabang, exhibits feature a collection of personal memorabilia of the royal family, including photos, musical instruments and numerous gifts received from dignitaries of foreign countries. Many of the rooms have been preserved since the day of the revolution when the royal family was forced into exile. (Shoes have to be removed at the entrance to the museum.)

From here proceed to Wat Xieng Thong, the Temple of the Golden City and one of the most important temples in Laos. The temple’s rear wall is adorned with one of the best known artworks in Laos – the exquisite Tree of Life mosaic.
