YANGON / BAGAN / YANGON

Depart from the ships pier, you will be met by Akorn guide at Thilawa port early morning at the gangway, who will accompany you on your transfer from pier to airport. Arrive at Yangon airport and check in for your flight to Bagan.

Flight Time

Leave        : Yangon                at 07:00 a.m.                Flight        : Air Kanbawza, K7 – 242

Arrive        : Nyaung U                at 08:20 a.m.

Please note that flight timing is subject to change.

Your first stop on the itinerary is the Nyaung Oo market, an essential stop for first-time visitors to this area of the country. This market, frequented by locals both buying and selling, is where many people come for spices, crafts and other goods. Browse the stalls and bag yourself a bargain, get a traditional Longyi (Burmese style of dress / trousers) or perhaps some lacquerware.

Next transfer to the magnificent Shwezigon Pagoda, built to house the Buddha’s collarbone, frontal bone and tooth. The location of Shwezigon Pagoda was determined by a white elephant released from Ceylon carrying Buddha’s tooth. The pagoda was built on the precise spot that the elephant stopped to rest.

Continue to Gubyaukgyi Temple (Wetkyi-in Temple), a 13th century temple with wall paintings that depict the lives of Buddha. The temple has a spire that resembles the Mahabodhi Temple at Buddha Gaya in India. In particular, you should take the time to view the paintings on the back of the Buddha image in the first hallway. These are paintings of the Man-Nat.

Reboard the motor coach and transfer to take a photo stop of the Bagan Panoramic View. After the photo stop, lunch will be served at Bagan Viewing Tower.

After lunch, transfer to visit the last "Burman-style" temple built in Bagan – Htilominlo Temple – which stands an impressive 150 feet tall and 140 feet wide at its base.

Four Buddha figures grace each corner of the ground and first floor, facing the cardinal directions. Many of the old murals can still be discerned, as can a number of the friezes. Several old horoscopes, painted with the belief they will protect the building from damage, can also be seen adorning the walls – which still stand in excellent shape, despite having been built around 1211 AD.

Ananda Temple or Ananda Pahto, or Phaya was one of the first of Bagans Great Temples, and to this day, it still remains one of the finest, one of the most magnificent and certainly one of the most photographed of all the structures in Bagan. The influence between Mon architecture coupled with North Indian input highlights the changes between the early and middle times of Bagan.

Located just to the east of the old city walls, its square-based beehive-like shape, gilded to mark the temple’s 900th anniversary in 1990, and expansive whitewashed temple structure dominate the surrounding countryside.

Paul Strachan, one of the foremost experts on the architecture of Bagan, has suggested that "none can rival the Ananda as an experience that enriches." Despite being damaged during the 1975 earthquake, it has now been carefully and fully restored.

On the way to the airport stop at Taung Bi village where you can meet the locals and have an insight into their local way of life.

YANGON / BAGAN / YANGON

Departing from the ships pier, you will be met by the Akorn guide at Thilawa port early morning at the gangway for the 3-hour drive to Bago.

Your first stop on the itinerary is the Shwemawdaw Pagoda. The original stupa was destroyed in the massive earthquake that struck in 1930.  The present structure was rebuilt between 1952 – 1954 and displays many of the remaining artefacts from the original structure.

From here, continue to a local monastery for the traditional morning alms giving.  At mid-day a taste of local Burmese specialities awaits.

This afternoon, visit Kanbawzathadi Palace a quintessential example of Mon architecture from the end of the 16th-century. Sadly, in 1599 the palace was levelled by fire and remained untouched until the 20th-century.  Archeaological work has discovered nearly 2,000 Buddha images, 167 teakwood pillars with inscription carved in the Mon language and the brick foundation.

Enroute back to Yangon, make a brief photo stop at the Kyaikpun Pagoda.  Here, four 30-metre high Buddha statues sit back-to-back.  According to legend, four Mon sisters helped build the statues.  If one of them were to marry, one of them would be destroyed.  In fact, one of the statues did collapse in the earthquake of 1930.

Arrive back to Yangon, transfer back to the quay side and your awaiting ship.
