4NT PRE-CRUISE: SERENGETI SPLENDOURS Please check with your travel professional for details regarding visa and inoculation requirements for Kenya and Tanzania.  It is the responsibility of the guest to obtain all appropriate visas before your cruise. DAY 1 - ARRIVE…

Please check with your travel professional for details regarding visa and inoculation requirements for Kenya and Tanzania.  It is the responsibility of the guest to obtain all appropriate visas before your cruise.

DAY 1 – ARRIVE NAIROBI

On arrival at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta Airport, the local Silversea representative is on hand to greet you and assist with your transfer to the hotel.   Dinner this evening is under your own arrangement.

Overnight at the Fairmont Norfolk Hotel.

DAY 2: NAIROBI / SERENGETI

After breakfast , check out and store your excess baggage that cannot accompany you at the hotel.   The local representative is on hand to assist with your transfer to Wilson Airport and check in for your flight to Serengeti (via Kilimanjaro).   As you change planes in Kilimanjaro, you are provided with a packed picnic lunch and assisted toward your onward flight to Serengeti.   Please note that you will not likely see Mount Kilimanjaro from the airport, however you may see it during landing or takeoff.

On arrival at Seronera airstrip, you are met and transferred through the renowned Serengeti National Park en route to the Four Seasons Lodge, enjoying a game-viewing drive en-route.

The Serengeti is arguably the most famous national park in the world; it perhaps defines the safari experience as surely as the wildlife that inhabit it. The famous short and long grass plains of the south slowly unfurl into the Acacia savannah of the central area, the hilly, more densely wooded areas of the north, and the extensive woodland in the western corridor, each with its own resident variations of African wildlife. The principal attraction of the Serengeti is the passing of the wildebeest migration: 1½ million wildebeest, and a retinue comprised of hundreds of thousands of zebra, gazelle and other plains game that follow close behind, stalked by the inevitable predators who make the most of the ‘feast’ close at hand.

The Four Seasons Lodge perfectly combines the intimacy of a lodge and the indulgence expected of a luxury hotel. Nestled within the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, in the vicinity of the great annual migration, the Four Seasons Lodge is a dream African hideaway offering spectacular views of wildlife, an active watering hole and superior accommodations.

Note: The precise timing of the Serengeti wildebeest migration is entirely dependent upon the rainfall patterns each year.

Dinner is enjoyed at the lodge.  Overnight at the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti.

DAY 3: SERENGETI

After breakfast, depart on a full day game viewing outing, accompanied by an experienced driver who also serves as your guide, thanks to his or her knowledge of the local area and its wildlife. Lunch boxes are available for a Four Seasons dining experience in the heart of the Serengeti, which is home to millions of stunning wildebeests during the migration period, as well as numerous species of birds and mammals, especially the big cats: leopards, cheetahs and lions.

Dinner is served again this evening at the lodge.  Overnight at the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti.

DAY 4: SERENGETI / NAIROBI

Following an early breakfast , check out and transfer to Seronera airstrip for your return flights to Nairobi.  You will once again fly via the airport at Kilimanjaro.  A Silversea representative is on hand to assist and provide packed picnic lunches.

Upon arrival at Nairobi airport, you are met again by the local representative and directed to your waiting vehicles.   Check in once again at the Fairmont Norfolk Hotel. After you have had time to freshen up, enjoy a relaxing afternoon at the hotel.  Dinner this evening is on your own arrangements.

Overnight at the Fairmont Norfolk Hotel, Nairobi

DAY 5:  NAIROBI  / MOMBASA

Following breakfast, check out and enjoy a half day city tour, before continuing to the Carnivore Restaurant for lunch.  Afterwards, transfer to the airport for the flight to Mombasa.

On arrival at Moi International Airport, you are met by the local representative and transferred to the ship with a brief  orientation tour provided en-route.

Bon Voyage!

All Land Programs require a minimum number of participants in order to operate as described. If this minimum number is not obtained, Silversea reserves the right to offer the program at a different rate based on private arrangements, or to cancel a specific departure.

This description is a general overview of the highlights of this program. The local Silversea representative will do everything possible to insure that all of the sites described here are visited, though the tour sequence and specific sites mentioned is subject to change. Closure of some sites due to local or national holiday observances, flight schedules, weather or other factors may affect the program, and the local operator reserves the right to substitute other sites if necessary.

The contents and order of activities of this program are subject to change by the lodge management without prior notice. Changes may be due to prevailing weather conditions and/or the movement of wildlife on the Game Reserve. Weather can be cool during early morning game drives in open vehicles when a windbreaker comes in handy. During the day, it can get extremely hot and sunhats, sun block and sunglasses are imperative. Remember to bring your camera and binoculars. Game drive vehicles traverse over uneven terrain making for ‘bumpy’ rides, and therefore are not recommended for anyone with back problems. This Land Adventure brings you close to nature; insects and other environmental exposure should be anticipated.

All Land Adventure fares are subject to change and are not guaranteed until payment is received in full by Silversea.   All Land Adventures are non-transferable and non-refundable for any reason, within 90 days of sailing and are recommended to guests 18 years or age and older.  Our local operator reserves the right to substitute other sites if local situations, including holidays and weather, require.  Silversea shall have no obligation or liability of any kind to guests for the business practices, acts or omissions in connection with or arising out of arrangements with independent contractors, including but not limited to airline carriers, ground-tour operators, and hotels since they are neither agents for nor employees of Silversea Cruises. Silversea’s liability does not extend beyond the vessel.

DAY 2: NAIROBI / NGORONGORO

After breakfast, check out and store the excess baggage that cannot accompany you with the hotel.   The local representative is on hand to assist with your transfer to Wilson Airport and check in for your flight to Manyara (via Kilimanjaro).   As you change planes in Kilimanjaro, you are provided with a packed picnic lunch and assisted toward your onward flight to Manyara.  Please note that you will not likely see Mount Kilimanjaro from the airport, however you may see it during landing or takeoff.

On arrival in Manyara airstrip, you will be met and transferred to the renowned Ngorongoro Crater area. Once there, proceed to the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge for check in, and then time at leisure to experience this unforgettable property.

Perched above cool, swirling mists on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater, the sumptuous safari suites at Ngorongoro Crater Lodge offer breath-taking views. Inspired in design by the Maasai mud and stick manyatta, or homestead, this is without doubt one of the most spectacular lodges in Africa.

Three separate and intimate camps totalling just 30 suites are reminiscent of a bygone era.

Steeped in romance, each stilted, handcrafted mud and thatch suite is adorned with graceful antiques, grand chandeliers and elegant African treasures. The bedroom, sitting room and en-suite bathroom boast floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the magnificent Crater below. Beaded chandeliers hang above large gilt mirrors, while antiques, billowing raw silk curtains and leather-backed chairs blend harmoniously with African art elements. En-suite bathrooms with a dramatic centrepiece of red roses feature spacious showers and chandelier-lit bathtubs. Personal butler discretely cater for each guest’s every need, bringing tea in bed, stoking fireplaces and drawing luxurious bubble baths. Frequently described as Maasai meets Versailles, each camp has its own guest sitting and dining areas, as well as viewing decks. The domed dining room, with its fireplace, crystal, silver and massive wooden platters, turns every meal into a special occasion.

Dinner is served at the Lodge.  Overnight at the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

DAY 3: NGORONGORO CRATER

After breakfast, depart for a full day in the crater, with picnic lunch provided.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers 2286 square kilometres (892 square miles) and encompasses the volcanic area around the Ngorongoro Crater – including the still active volcano of Oldonyo Lengai and the famous Olduvai Gorge. Its centrepiece, the Ngorongoro Crater, is the largest unbroken caldera in the world and the first sight of it is breathtaking. The floor of the crater is only 100 square miles but is home to around 30,000 animals, with a high concentration of predators.

After spending most of the day in the crater, proceed to a visit of a local Maasai Village. Thereafter return to the Lodge and take some time to relax before meeting the rest of the guests for sundowners, followed by dinner.

Overnight at the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

DAY 4: NGORONGORO / NAIROBI

Please check with your travel professional for details regarding visa and inoculation requirements for Kenya.  It is the responsibility of the guest to obtain all appropriate visas before your cruise.

DAY 1 – SATURDAY, 03 DECEMBER – ARRIVE NAIROBI

On arrival at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta Airport, the local Silversea representative is on hand to greet you and assist with your transfer to the hotel.   Dinner this evening is under your own arrangement.

Overnight at the Fairmont Norfolk Hotel.

DAY 2 – SUNDAY, 04 DECEMBER – NAIROBI / MOUNT KENYA SAFARI CLUB

After breakfast this morning, the group visits the Giraffe Centre and Daphne Sheldricks Animal Orphanage.

Giraffe Centre: is the headquarters for AFEW, the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife.  Made famous by ‘Daisy Rothschild’, a giraffe calf rescued from Soi, on the border of Western Kenya, Giraffe Centre was established in 1983 and the breeding programme has been a great success. Visitors can watch these gentle giants at eye level from a raised platform and hand-feed them.

Daphne is the widow of pioneer wildlife ranger David Sheldrick and has set up the orphanage on the edge of Nairobi National Park to successfully raise orphaned wild animals (mainly elephant and rhino) and reintroduce them into the wild. It is important to note that entrance is usually between 11.00 hrs and 12.00 hrs when the animals come to the waterhole and are bottle fed with milk. This time-slot is open to the general public – and is therefore not exclusive to Silversea guests.

Lunch today is at Carnivore Restaurant.

The Carnivore Restaurant has become one of Nairobi’s musts!  Situated on the edge of Nairobi National Park, the Carnivore is – as the name suggests – a meat eater’s paradise.  The focal point of the main restaurant is the ‘roasting pit’ where an enormous variety of both game and domestic meat is roasted on huge metal spears.  Waiters bring these different meats to the table and carve onto piping hot plates.  Guests have the opportunity to sample an array of meats which may include some game meat: ostrich, hartebeest and crocodile.  Delicious sauces and crisp salads accompany the meal. Waiters continue their rounds until you admit defeat and lower your flag (provided on the table!). For ‘herbivores’ there is an extensive vegetarian menu.  If you have any room left after the unlimited servings, a variety of sweets are on offer before mugfuls of steaming Kenya coffee herald the end of the meal.

Later transfer to Wilson Airport, which handles light aircraft and domestic flights. Your flight to Nanyuki will take 40-45 minutes.  For the flights Nairobi/Nanyuki/Nairobi the aircraft will be Cessna Caravans (10-seater), Twin Otter (16 seater), Let (18-seater) or Dash 7 (45-seater) depending on passenger load.

Your group is met on arrival and transferred to Mount Kenya Safari Club. A glass of sparkling wine and  entertainment by local dancers insures a very warm welcome.

The Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club is one of Kenya’s most glamorous and long-established hotels. Set up by Hollywood movie star, William Holden, when he was at the height of his fame in the 1950s, the Mount Kenya Safari Club has hosted everyone from John Wayne to Catherine Deneuve.

Set on the forest-clad flanks of Mount Kenya, the Club has 115 rooms and bungalows, all with spectacular views of Mount Kenya. The 100 acres of landscaped gardens are set in 1,000 acres of private game reserve adjoining the vast Mount Kenya National Park. There’s a golf course, spa and swimming pool at the Lodge and nearby are all the game viewing opportunities of Laikipia. A great activity centre, the Safari Club is nonetheless first and foremost a luxury hotel. Its restaurants and bars all provide a high level service in one of the most beautiful spots in Africa.

After settling in, gather at the Rose Garden for a welcome cocktail and canapés.  Enjoy some time to relax before dinner is served at the club’s main restaurant.

Overnight at Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club

DAY 3 – MONDAY, 05 DECEMBER – MOUNT KENYA SAFARI CLUB

After breakfast drive to Sweetwaters Game Reserve, Ol Pejeta for your morning game drive.

The 23,000-acre Sweetwaters Reserve is situated within the sprawling Ol Pejeta ranch with magnificent views across the plains to the peaks of Mount Kenya. A variety of plains game is found within the reserve and the big cats may also be seen. Orphaned rhino and warthog (one of which was the model for Pumba, from the movie the Lion King), which have been reared by hand, provide a wonderful treat for children, as does the chimpanzee sanctuary. The sanctuary houses chimps mainly from the Jane Goodall Institute in Burundi, where a great many were placed after being rescued. The sanctuary is a non-profit venture, which aims not only to cover the investment and operating costs of the sanctuary, but also to channel funds into the Jane Goodall Institute for conservation projects for chimpanzees in the wild throughout Africa.

Return to Mount Kenya Safari Club for lunch.

This afternoon your guide will assist to arrange for one of the complimentary activities available at the club including visit to the William Holden Animal Orphanage, nature walk, swimming, table tennis, giant jenga, English bowling, darts,  giant tic tac toe, American pool, giant ludo, croquet, badminton and dog walks.

Other optional activities available at a cost include massage & beauty treatment (US$40 – US$100), limited horse riding (US$33 per hour) and golf (Golf set rental US$25, caddy US$7 per round and green fees US$7 per person)

The evening is one of the many highlights of your safari, as you sit down to a Bush Banquet near River Likii. You dine under the star studded African sky (weather permitting), an experience that will bring back memories of Karen Blixen and Denys Finch-Hatton in ‘Out of Africa’.

Overnight at Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club

Situated in the Western Cape, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, resting at the foot of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, pays homage to the San people who trekked this earth in the heart of South Africa’s Little Karoo. Sanbona, often referred to as the ‘Arizona of Southern Africa’ and the spirit of the San people, invites you to stay and explore a special wilderness sanctuary call Dwyka Tented Camp, offering five star accommodation surrounded by ancient volcanic mountains and endless vistas. Wildlife that may be viewed on the reserve includes lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, white rhino, brown hyena, black-backed jackal, cheetah, hippopotamus, giraffe, springbok, zebra, eland and many more.

Please note: Participants in this program should schedule their flights to arrive into Cape Town, South Africa

Please check with your travel professional for details regarding a South African visa. It is the responsibility of each guest to obtain appropriate visa documents prior to cruising.  Please note that two consecutive blank pages are compulsory for entry into S. Africa.

DAY 1 – CAPE TOWN / SANBONA

The local Silversea representative is on hand once you have completed all disembarkation formalities.   It is recommended to store your main cruise luggage at the Victoria & Alfred hotel here in Cape Town and travel to the safari camp with 1 suitcase and informal clothes.

Meeting you is a local English-speaking tour guide who will accompany you on your transfer to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve. The travelling time is approximately 3 – 3 ½ hours to the main entrance gate through small towns, vineyards and orchards.

Upon arrival at the main entrance gate, you are met by a lodge representative who transfers you to Dwyka Tented Lodge.

Beautifully appointed tents exude an atmosphere of pioneering adventure in a vast and hidden landscape. Dwyka Tented Lodge is surrounded by awe-inspiring rock formations which was once the home of ancient Khoisan hunters. Situated on a horseshoe bend of a dry Karoo ravine, the lodge with 9 luxury tents has a Relaxation Retreat, communal lounge with fireplace and TV, wine cellar and open air boma.

Upon arrival at the lodge take care of check-in formalities and enjoy lunch before relaxing in the comfort of your spacious tented suite.

Sundowner evening drives offer spectacular displays of light as the evening sun sets over the Little Karoo.

Join a late afternoon nature drive accompanied by qualified rangers in comfortable open Landcruisers. Enjoy sipping on a refreshing "sundowner" drink before returning to the lodge for dinner.

After dinner, gaze up at the "Milky Way" and try to spot the "Southern Cross" & "Orion’s Belt" before retiring for the night. With the absence of artificial light, the stargazing at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is phenomenal and amongst the best in Southern Africa.

Overnight at the Dwyka Tented Lodge

DAY 2 – DWYKA TENTED LODGE

Spend the day at Dwyka Tented Camp, enjoying the cuisine and embarking on early morning and late afternoon game drives that continue after nightfall.

After an early morning wake up call, gather with fellow travellers for tea, coffee and pastries before departing on a nature drive.  Early morning is the best opportunity to see those animals that have been active overnight and are looking for deep shade in which to rest.

During the drive, various species of plants, animals, big game and birds can be seen. Wildlife that may be viewed on the reserve includes lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, white rhino, brown hyena, black-backed jackal, cheetah, hippopotamus, giraffe, springbok, zebra, eland, kuku, red harbeest, black wildebeest, grey rhebok, common duiker, steenbok, klipspringer, grysbok, ostrich and riverine rabbit.

Return to the lodge for breakfast, and enjoy some time at leisure before lunch is served. Relax in the comfort of your room, or join your ranger on a guided nature walk.

Sanbona has about 600 species of plants and it is intriguing to know that various species are flowering at different times throughout the year. There are various floral kingdoms that make up the Reserve, which include Acacia Thickets, Nama, Karoo, Renosterveld, Succulent Karoo and Central Mountain Fynbos. Succulents are especially varied and fascinating with names like Baby’s Bottoms, Ostrich Toes and Pig’s Ears.

There are also 7 recorded rock-art sites on the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve and some of these may be visited during your stay.

In the late afternoon, join another sundowner nature drive before returning to the lodge for dinner.

Prince Alfred visited the Cape in 1870 and officially opened the Breakwater basin, today’s Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. You can feel the ambience of colonial Cape Town as you step into the foyer, sense the past of shipwrecks and storms that colour every corner, then relax in the elegant contemporary bedrooms…and savour the atmosphere of the world’s most famous working harbour.

Cape Grace has held pride of place on its own quay in the V&A Waterfront for the past 16 years, maintaining and increasing its reputation for ultimate style, luxury and service in the perfect waterside setting. Head to toe pampering is a speciality at the Spa at Cape Grace with QMS Medicosmetics, Kalahari signature massages and beauty treatments. In keeping with their belief that guests should feel completely at ease, dining is whenever and wherever you would like it; in the stunning Signal Restaurant adorned with quirky chandeliers, on the water’s edge at Bascule Bar overlooking the super-yachts, beside the 15-metre swimming pool, in the cool interior of the library or from the 24-hour room service. Superb cuisine under Executive Chef Malika van Reenen, encompasses classic dishes influenced by local flavours and unique South African fare reflecting the country’s many cultures. Dropping in on Bascule Whisky, Wine & Cocktail Bar puts the final touches to a meal or as a destination of its own, with one of the largest whisky collections in South Africa.
