Portofino, Italy
One of Italy’s most picturesque and enchanting resort destinations is nestled in a narrow cove on the Gulf of Rapallo. Tiny Portofino owes its fame and popularity to its spectacular setting, balmy climate and lush, luxuriant vegetation. This acclaimed ‘Pearl of the Riviera’ has long been a favourite with celebrities and artists who have come to appreciate the unsurpassed charm and intimacy of this cliff-lined port.

Overlooking the rocky coastline, quaint Portofino surprises with incredible views of the gulf and surrounding pine-covered hillsides. High above the village stand the church and fortress of San Giorgio, which offer beautiful panoramic views extending over the resort and harbour.

In 1935, the city government of nearby Genoa declared Portofino a national monument. Since altering the architecture of any structure requires approval from a committee, Portofino’s appearance has changed very little over past decades.

Visitors enjoy the unique ambience, chic boutiques and quaint cafés that overlook the small yacht harbour and line the narrow, cobbled streets. Other guests prefer to explore along the coastline, where tiny villages are tucked away in hidden coves.

Don’t miss out on a favourite pastime, people-watching, while sitting in one of the outdoor cafés, and sipping a campari or cappuccino. The boutiques and designer shops located nearby tempt prospective buyers with chic resort wear and Italian designer clothing.

Pier Information
The ship is scheduled to anchor. Guests will be taken ashore the tiny harbour via the ship’s tenders. All of Portofino is within easy walking distance. Taxis are generally available some 600 yards (548 metres) from the pier, if you wish to take trips farther afield.

Shopping
There are few bargains to be found, which is not surprising given the exclusivity of Portofino. However, it is fun to browse the designer boutiques and upscale gift shops. Art galleries feature works of renowned artists who make Portofino their home. Most shops stay open all day during the summer season. The local currency is the euro.

Cuisine
Overlooking the harbour are several trendy restaurants. Deluxe hotels offer a dining experience that will be remembered for impeccable service and excellent cuisine (reservations are recommended). Among the best-known is the luxury Hotel Splendido, located in a private park above Portofino, and Il Pitosforo Restaurant, close to the harbour.

Other Sites
Fortress and Church of San Giorgio

The Church of San Giorgio can be reached by walking up a flight of steps, a rewarding experience for the magnificent views offered here. The fortress can be visited on a walking tour of the promontory.
