Kotor, Montenegro
Montenegro is a beautiful country with deep blue sea, crystal clear rivers, dense forests, and splendid lakes. Situated across the Adriatic from Italy, Montenegro is bordered on the south by Albania. Its other neighbours are the former Yugoslav republics of Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Serbia.

The Old Town of Kotor is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in this part of the Mediterranean. It has succeeded in maintaining its original form, typical of towns from the 12th to 14th centuries. A major earthquake in 1979 destroyed many historic buildings that have since been rebuilt.

In the Middle Ages, this natural harbour was an important artistic and commercial centre, with its own famous schools of masonry and iconography. These attributes, in addition to its architectural treasures, led to the inclusion of Kotor as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

Please note: During the height of summer (July and August), the heat in Kotor can be extreme. We recommend wearing sun protection and drinking plenty of fluids whilst exploring the area at this time of year.

Shopping in Kotor offers endless possibilities. The Old Town shopping area is within walking distance of the pier, and features stores, souvenir shops, cafés, and restaurants. Many shops close for the obligatory lunchtime between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Tourist-oriented shops usually stay open throughout the day. The local currency is the euro.

Cuisine
In order to get to the heart of Montenegro, you should try the national specialities. On the coast, enjoy dishes prepared with olive oil and eaten with the ever-present olives and wine. European sea bass and other fish, crabs, oysters, and squid are prepared with olive oil and a lot of spices. After a delicious meal, you can try domestic liquors that include brandies or top quality red wines. A favourite drink in Montenegro is the unique Niksicko Beer.
