The first American woman to walk in space, Dr. Sullivan is a veteran of three shuttle missions and a 2004 inductee to the Astronaut Hall of Fame. Selected by NASA in January 1978, Dr. Sullivan became an astronaut in August 1979. In 1993, Dr. Sullivan left NASA to accept a Presidential appointment to the post of Chief Scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). In 1996, Dr. Sullivan became President & CEO of COSI, one of the nation's leading science centers. Dr. Sullivan has a passion for igniting in others the wonder and importance of science, math and technology. With the completion of her third Apollo mission, Dr. Sullivan logged 532 hours in space. She is an oceanography officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve, holding the rank of Captain, and she is a private pilot, rated in powered and glider aircraft. Dr. Sullivan's life-long commitment to science education earned her the National Science Board's Public Service Award in 2003 and a Presidential appointment to membership on the Board in 2004. Her most recent appointment is as Director, Battelle Center for Mathematics & Science Education Policy at The John Glenn School of Public Affairs, Ohio State University.
