Silver Shadow Hits a High Note Down Under

Last Friday Silver Shadow concluded her first-ever 30-day circumnavigation voyage of Australia, docking at Sydney's Circular Quay.

To mark the special occasion, new guests who embarked on Friday began their voyage with the opportunity to enjoy an exclusive short performance by the highly acclaimed star of Opera Australia, Amelia Farrugia, in the ship’s theatre. The performance featured two Puccini arias, including the famous Musetta's Waltz from La Bohéme.

One of Australia's finest sopranos, Ms Farrugia has performed many leading roles for Opera Australia. She is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has won numerous major singing competitions including McDonald's Operatic Aria (1994), The Herald Sun Aria (1994) and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in Australia and New York (1994-1995). She was awarded NSW Young Achiever of the Year (1996) and Green Room Award (2009).

Ms Farrugia was accompanied on piano by fellow Sydney Conservatorium graduate Kate Golla; the award-winning pianist, who has performed regularly as a member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, is currently on the music staff of Opera Australia.

Following Ms Farrugia's performance, Silversea's senior vice president for Asia Pacific, Steve Odell, co-hosted an exclusive dinner in Silver Shadow’s intimate Le Champagne restaurant, together with David Clarke AO, chairman of the Opera Australia Capital Fund, for a select gathering of the fund's important private patrons.

Silversea has supported the fundraising efforts of the Opera Australia Capital Fund since 2001. The fund is a tribute to Opera Australia’s many supporters, whose collective generosity has built a legacy that will be appreciated by opera artists and audiences in the years ahead.

That same evening, across the harbour, guests from Silver Shadow enjoyed a performance of Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at the iconic Sydney Opera House, before the ship departed for Singapore at 11.00 pm.

On 1 March, Sydney will welcome Silver Shadow’s sister ship, the spectacular new 540-guest Silver Spirit, for a two day visit. A number of events will take place to introduce the new flagship to the Australian media and Silversea’s travel partners.
